Hi! My boyfriend and I found a ring (see photo below) at a local jeweler. We are looking for advice to confirm that its a good deal.

The general specs are Round center stone: I color; VS2; 8.58 spread; 2.36 cts. I am not sure about the specs for the side stones but they are 4 precision cut baguettes. The ring is from the 1940s. We are waiting to get the GIA report from the jeweler.

The Jeweler is asking: Diamond alone for 14,200 or the diamond w/setting for 16,200.

Does this sound like a good deal? Its the best prices we have come across. I am a size 5 3/4 and am wanting good coverage on my finger.

Thank you so much!!

You don't say what carat weight it is, but I'm presuming it's over 2 with that mm size. Do you love it? Is it your dream ring? Then go for it! Just be sure to check what the return policy is, and get it appraised right away.

Basically my bf and I do not know very much about diamonds. However, our goal was to get the biggest spread/bang for our budget (17K).

here is another photo.

How good a deal will depend on what the GIA report says. Post it here when you get a copy, and do not commit until you do. The stone could be a great deal if it is a decent cut, but I am wondering when it was graded by GIA? They would have had to remove the stone from the setting to do that. I love the setting, but $2000 additional for the setting is too much. They'd probably not be able to get $1000 for it if they sold the stone separately, so if you want the setting, too, I would offer $1000 less and see what they say.

One think about the diamond is, it could actually be recut to improve the cut since you have some room to recut and keep it at 2 cts. or more. If you wanted to do that, I wouldn't keep the setting because it might not fit as well. Lots to consider, but I'll be interested to see the GIA report.

Will do! We requested the GIA report yesterday so we will post it when it comes in. Thank you so much for the help!
