I think I know the answer to this question but having done a search I''m less certain than before...

What setting would tend to minimize the body color of a diamond - 18K yellow gold or platinum?

Several people have mentioned that diamonds take on some of the color of their surroundings and that yellow gold bands can actually impart color to the stone, while others maintain that the contrast of the white(ish) stone against the yellow band should make the stone appear whiter.

Your thoughts please...

I think that platinum enhances the contrast of color so you see more color in a stone set in platinum.

I think it may depend a little bit on the amount of color you''re talking about. What is the color grading of your diamond? I''ve seen diamonds down to a K that look stunning in both white and yellow gold, so it''s hard to say.

I have a J in platinum, color isn''t noticeable @ all unless you know what to look for, only visible from the side & below (it''s faint). Face up is unquestionably white.

My stone is also a J and it is an AGS0. I would like to set it in the most favorable setting to mask whatever minimal color is present. I''ve noticed that the stone tends to pick up its surrounding colors and this concerns me regarding 18K yellow gold (though intuitively it would seem to make sense that the yellow setting would minimize any yellow present in the stone)...

If we''re talking an ideal J, I really think you can do either...

yup.

is this for you or your gal, tunis? figure out her preference. my fiance never wears anything gold (colored). it''s all white gold, sterling silver, or now platinum.

I have heard both schools of thought. It seems to me the yellow gold would reflect in the diamond and make it look more yellow. I have a K and it looks gorgeous in white gold.

MMT, this is the way I''m leaning now, too. I have to say initially I thought yellow gold would minimize any color but I''m beginning to question that assessment as I move the stone around against different backdrops...

TopSecret, she wears both white and yellow gold so either would be appropriate...

Yellow gold will definitely add yellow to the stone colour. It may not be all that noticeable, but it will be there, especially if the stone is relatively large. Platinum will be more neutral. The contrast may still look nice, but if you want it to scream "white!", go with platinum.

That is an interesting post, oldmancoyote, as you suggest BOTH that the yellow gold will impart its color on the stone while at the same time the contrast (of the yellow band) may be appealing... Still not sure which way to go here but I definitely do see more color in the stone in certain lighting conditions and would hate to be married (pun intended) to a yellow band that imparts its own color...

I wear my diamond in yellow gold and it seems to me to make the stone (H) whiter as a contrast to the yellow.

Generally, even if the band is yellow gold, the head will be white gold or platinum to minimize color being picked up by the stone. So, either way, the diamond will probably be set in a white metal. The color of the band is just a matter of personal preference.

I am pretty sure Gary recommends to set the stone in a yellow gold bezel/rubbed over setting. Try and do a search on this topic and check out Gary''s posts, I know he has commented on this topic several times in the past. Putting a lower colour stone next to a white metal will enhance the colour difference, not hide it.

Just wondering which stone you picked, Tunis? Have you given us the specs, pictures?

I was just going to say that you could do a yellow gold band with a white gold head and have the best of both worlds. The diamond would be most surrounded by white, but it would still show a nice contrast with the yellow. Also, how does she feel about bezels? The only place you''ll really notice the color in a J is generally from the side view. If you cover up the side with the setting, I doubt you''ll see any color anyway.

Thanks for asking, Fly Girl. Here''s the link to the stone I bought:

You and a few others on here gave me good advice on this stone as it''s a real beauty. I''m trying to maximize that beauty with the correct setting choice. I should be able to post pics to share with everyone when it is set.

Thanks again for your help,

Tunis

Awesome diamond, Tunis! Yep, knew you would be really, really happy with that one!

I vote for platinum. That diamond deserves the best, as does your lady!

That is an idea, Kelli. I''ll have to look into different settings. As of right now my main focus has been on traditional tiffany style. The color in my stone isn''t so much that I feel the need to cover things up. I''m really just looking for maximum effect...
