Thanks for telling it like it is, @kenny

THIS. YES!

Our family has been in social Isolation since March 6. At first I was still walking on hiking trails but then I realized people were running and biking there. My husband has gone to the grocery store, six days ago. From now on we will get home delivery. Extreme social distancing is the only way to flatten the curve. I’m terrified because no one seems to be taking the need for strict social distancing seriously.

First of all, social distancing and handwashing are ESSENTIAL with any viral epidemic/pandemic. To a certain extent, those practices are good all winter to prevent colds and regular influenza.

But Kenny. You can certainly boost your overall immune system especially by eating healthy foods and taking vitamin C and other vitamins if you diet does not supply all you need. Getting exericise and sleep helps, too. I have recommendations from several MDs. It may or may not keep you from getting the illness, but it can help make it milder or be over it faster. I have had 3 colds start over this winter (feeling bad, sinus pressure), and I knocked them out within 24 hours by taking vitamins C and D3. I honestly am rarely ever sick and rarely have a cold.

And in fact, high dose IV vitamin C has been used to improve sepsis outcomes. There is also a study being done with vit C with coronavirus patients in China, see second link.

So don't tell me you can't boost your immune system. A person with a very week immune system is much more likely to have a severe case of anything. Did you know most people are deficient in vit D in the winter? Maybe not because you are in CA. It is always preferable to get the vitamins in one's diet. But taking extra C is a pretty good idea for upper respiratory infections. Vit A and D are important, too. See study below.

"Vitamins C and E: Vitamins C and E are antioxidants that help to destroy free radicals and support the body’s natural immune response."

"Vitamin D: Research shows vitamin D supplementation may reduce the risk for viral infections, including respiratory tract infections, by reducing production of proinflammatory compounds in the body. Increased vitamin D in the blood has been linked to prevention of other chronic diseases including tuberculosis, hepatitis, and cardiovascular disease. Food sources of vitamin D include fortified cereals and plant-based milks and supplements."

I could post many more links, but this gives you an idea. I really think it is sad that more doctors do not consider nutrition and its importance for good health. Most just write prescriptions with side effects that can sometimes make one sicker than they were at the start. Boosting my immune system is mainly going to help me stay well more and expose others less since I am sick less often or for a shorter time. And doing that as well as staying away from sick people, staying away from well people when I am sick, and washing my hands often are ALL SMART IDEAS!

I’m under self isolation and washing hands. But I’m also eating fresh foods, drinking lots of water, orange juice, taking elderberry tablets and zinc, and getting 8 hours of sleep a night.
