17 teen year old beaten to death in VA

A 17 year old was killed walking from early morning breakfast IHOP back to a mosque with her friends. A man somehow got into an altercation with a group of teens walking, stepped out of his car, and beat one with a baseball while her friends managed to run away, eventually leaving her in a lake. Its not clear if it was a hate crime or road rage (investigators are citing road rage, but since the girls were walking, that doesn't really make sense to me). It is just insane to me--that she was with a group of friends when this happened--and the way that he killed her. I don't know much about criminal violence, but this--beating someone to death--seems so personal. I am so very sad for her family.

Indylady this is so very tragic and I agree with you. Beating someone to death with a baseball bat sure feels personal and just a horrible way to die. It is terrifying how angry some people can be and how that anger manifests itself. My heart goes out to that poor family and that poor girl who had her whole life ahead of her.

Could be road rage, I was crossing the road at a crosswalk once with a group and a guy comes speeding up and slams on his brakes and starts yelling and honking.
We kinda flew the bird in his direction and took our time crossing the street.
Its not a stretch to consider that someone like him would have jumped out and went after someone the way he was acting.

Yes--definitely. I think that it most impacts women that cover their hair; the headscarf is such an identifier that it becomes an easy target.

That could make sense. Its a horrific and senseless killing even if due to road rage.

I don't buy road rage. He didn't go after the person he had the argument with. He attacked a girl fleeing. Not only that once he hit her (apparently not killing her) kidnapped her and then killed her elsewhere. That's not just a momentary lapse.

Could have been both. He has issues - driving around with a baseball bat in your car maybe not the best idea to start with. But, he is from El Salvador and actually, is now waiting a trial, a conviction, and ultimately, a deportation. I think he must have very serious anger issues. I also wonder if drugs were somehow involved, as he was "driving erratically", and I think it all started over his driving. What animal would hit a woman over the head and neck with the baseball bat is a rhetorical question, of course. Most likely, he has misogynist, parochial mentality. Whether he is specifically anti-Islamic remains to be answered, and hopefully, will be answered in the course of the trial. If it is, it will be an additional charge, but he is not going to get off lightly.
