15 ways of avoiding Diamond Shrinkage Syndrome: DSS

1. Clean your ring often so that it always looks its best and brightest and biggest.
2. Set your diamond in a ring with a thinner band. The marked difference in the diameter of the diamond and the diameter of the band will make the diamond look larger.
3. Wear your diamond ring every other day. Every second morning it will look as it did when you were first given it.
4. Take a photo of your diamond ring with your phone. You’ll see the ring from a different perspective.
5. Take a photo of your diamond ring but in the mirror. You’ll see it from a very different perspective.
6. Take a photo of your diamond ring and post it on Pricescope. You will notice how nice and big it looks.
7. Lose a little weight. Your diamond will look larger in comparison with the width of your fingers.
8. Attach a magnifying glass to your ring so that the diamond always looks larger than it is. Do take care on sunny days not to accidently set fire to anything.
9. To avoid setting fire to anything take a photo of your diamond, print it at twice the size and superglue it to your ring. You will look like you possess an enormous diamond and everyone will be suitably jealous. (When the diamond starts to look small again you can print the photo at four times the size.)
10. Expand your range of friends. If all your friends have 1 carat plus diamonds, and the average diamond size is 0.38 carats, you’re missing out on a lot of interesting people.
11. Always arrive at restaurants early so that you can spend 20 minutes positioning the spotlights so that they all point at your diamond. This will ensure that your diamond looks bigger and more sparkly than another other diamond around the table.
12. Sell your diamond ring and buy a smaller diamond ring. This makes a statement that you are not going to be controlled by material possessions.
13. Remind yourself repeatedly that diamonds are only crystallised carbon. They are beautiful and fun but unimportant compared to the giver.
14. Make sure that any future diamond ring is not only from your partner but also your children. Trust me, if your children have helped choose your ring then no other ring will ever compete with your ring.
15. Stop comparing your ring with rings on Pricescope, Weddingbee, GOG, Whiteflash, Blue Nile, James Allen, Brian Gavin, Tiffany, Cartier and De Beers websites quite so often. You have more important things to do than make yourself envious. Just remember that your ring is the best ring in the world.

I remember being given my 7-stone ring, and asking the jeweler if he thought the stones were "too big." His response: "Don't worry - they'll shrink!"

OMG Guilty as charged.......and I check what the diamond prices are daily to see how much my stone is worth and if we paid too much

I've thought of other things too.

16. Wear your contact lenses and glasses at the same time and your diamond will look bigger. Sadly this only works if you are longsighted.
17. Take your diamond ring with you when scuba diving. The magnification due to refraction between the water and the face mask will make your diamond look around 33% bigger.
18. Stand out in a thunder storm with your arm outstretched and your palm facing down. Either you will be stuck by lightning or a big fat raindrop will land on your diamond and make the diamond look bigger.
19.. Buy a telescope or pair of binoculars. Every morning place your diamond ring at one end of the room and yourself plus optical instrument at the other and prepare to gaze lovingly at your enormous gem.
20. Invest in a setting that holds the diamond 20 cm above the rest of your ring. As long as the diamond is facing towards you it will appear to have grown significantly in size but careful not to be arrested in possession of what the police might consider a dangerous weapon.
21. Arm shortening surgery. Drastic, I know, but its amazing what cosmetic surgery that people are having today.
22. Look at your diamond ring through objects that magnify. Collect wine bottles, juice bottles, nail varnish bottles, etc. and just line them up all over your house.
23. On holiday take photos with your diamond ring in the foreground and a famous landmark or celestial object in the background. If you make sure that both objects are in focus you can make your diamond look at big as the White House, the Empire State Building, Buckingham Palace, the Pyramids, the Taj Mahal, the Moon and the Sun. (If after this you are still suffering from DSS you seriously have a problem.)

I think that we have to maintain some sort of humour about this. Other ideas, however silly, are welcome.
