Hi all

i have came across a 12 ct pear diamond( I,VS2),HRD certified.

in the comments section is written: laser drilled.

i know that the treatment of the inclusion is permenant, but i want to know after the destruction of the inclusion, could the tunnel be free of liquids or resin filled in it to resemble the same R.I of the diamond,or its certain that its filled with the resin!?

also i want to know how much lower a laser drilled diamond should be sold comparing to an undrilled diamond?!

Thank You

.... crickets chirping.....

the silence is deafening. don''t buy this stone.

Hello there,

i agree with ladykemma. Whilst the price differential can be quite substantial, it is not worthwhile in my personal opinion. I read somewhere (sorry I forget where) that the laser treatment can be reversed (??) or at least affected when the stone is subjected to heat (which it may very well do when it is being set - I''ve had my ring "blow-drying" with a hair dryer after it was set and washed/ cleaned, as otherwise the water marks would stay).

Moreover, if you are buying a stone as a present, the recipient may not thank you once they find out that it is laser-drilled. To me, the whole point of buying something as beautiful as a natural diamond would be lost. If you are buying it for yourself, you may have trouble trading up, as I''ve not seen any website advertising trade-ups for laser-filled diamonds.

Anyway, it is only my 2 cents. The decision is entirely yours of course.

Personally, I would pass on this monster diamond and go for one which is non enhanced. Obviously the price of an enhanced diamond is less than natural, but in a case like this you really need an expert opinion if you intend to spend such a large amount of money to check this diamond out anyway, an appraiser can help you by physically examining this diamond and advising you on price etc. Also as a rule of thumb, a laser treated diamond will be more expensive than a filled diamond, both are clarity enhanced but the processes are different.

Here is some info for you on clarity enhancement which may help in the meantime.

Ok,
What does the diamond look like?
Is it beautiful?
Can you see the laser drill hole without magnification? Probably not.
If the stone looks great and the price is fair buy it with the understanding that you can return it if it does not live up to what they say it is. Have it appraised by a gemeologist of your choice. If the diamond is not what they say it is bring it back.
Just remember in the end the diamond has to look fantastic on your hand. All the certificates in the wolrd ca not help with that.

Hi Ghoray. A stone certed by HRD as "laser drilled" is most certainly a clean laser drill hole with no resin. If it had resin, it would correctly be described as laser drilled & clarity enhanced (filled). I doubt HRD would miss that aspect of the treatment.

The resin "Yehuda type" treatment doesn''t take well with drill holes. It is more effective in stones with fractures, and not all of them at that. The ones that take the best have very "clean" fractures with surfaces close together. A ragged, wider fracture doesn''t treat well, nor do most laser drill holes.

The price difference would be determined by several factors. Size, shape, visibility & location of the drill hole. Lasered stones are definitely less liquid than non-treated. Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. They''re usually accompanied with a discount. Why don''t you ask the vendor what discount he is assigning the stone over what he would charge if it were non-lasered?

I wonder if the lazer drill is close enough to the surface of the diamond that it might be recut to remove it and still end up with a sizeable stone for a good discount? I don't know how feasible that would be, but it's an interesting idea....

The other question is, how can a lazer drilled diamond be a VS2? It must be a tiny, tiny hole???
