hi folks
i have been talking to a jeweller about having a ring mounting custom made from platinum. from what i understand, nearly all platinum jewellery made these days is actually a platinum alloy with about 95% pt. the jeweller i have been speaking to however was telling me that most of their custom pieces are 100% pt which has been ''pre stressed'' to make the metal extremely dense...they were saying this is actually a very old technique that is not really used these days.
has anybody out there heard of this at all? does pre stressing result in a stronger metal? are there any advantages to using 100% pt? i have to say the designs they have are extremely intricate and fine with much hand piercing/carving - much more so than anything modern i have seen and kind of similar to some of the antique filigree settings they no longer make...perhaps this is possible as a result of the pre-stressing?
the mounts are also the most expensive that i have ever seen
which i suspect is due to the extra labour/piercing?
ps, not sure if anybody saw the ideal scope image of my recently purchased OEC
would appreciate any comments as i don''t have much of an idea of what it means
it can be found in this post
