I am helping a friend out with finding a diamond for his pending engagment.

He has a budget of 10 thousand for the stone and would like a 1.8 to a 2.2, he says around G - H colour and he will go down in clarity to get a bigger diamond. It would have to be at least eye clean though. He is looking for a round brilliant.

I told him this may be hard, and from what I have found so far it doesnt look like its possible, and this is why I am hoping all of the people at Pricescope may be able to help me out.

In order to get a 2 carat ring for $10,00 , your friend would have to go with a J color and a cut of good or very good.

Thank you Stone-Cold. Is there obvious yellow in an I coloured stone? Mine is an F - so I am not sure what an I would face up like.

That will depend on him, how good his color perception is. Bring him around to check different color stones of ideal cut.

If you can go to H, I is just a grade lower... :P

Use this video as a reference, go till the end where there is a line up of the stones face up, you will see how difficult it is to tell the color of the stone face up, even side by side. Color perception with the video will be dependent on the monitor he view it from too, so use it only as a guide.

OK, here''s the thing about color. Color is not *bad* in a diamond; it just "is".

I have an AGS-0 2.36 J/SI2 RB, and it is beautiful. (Linky) It faces up VERY white, and is totally eyeclean. I am all about SIZE, but not at the expense of beauty. The most important thing to make a dimaond sparkle is the CUT. Don''t settle for less there.

After that, it''s all personal preference. I was more than happy to choose a lower color/clarity combo to get the size I wanted. I am a very fussy consumer, too, believe me! I insisted on no hint of *yellow* in the stone, and totally eyeclean, even at close scrutiny. Bingo!

He''s going to have to compromise on something.
Does the stone have to be an RB? Certain cuts, like marquise and pear will look like 2 carats, although somewhat smaller, if he wants to do that.

Sorry, just reread and I see it has to be anRB.
I saw an ideal cut J once next to my ideal cut F--you could tell it was not the same color but the stone was gorgeous--and you couldn''t tell u less you were side by side.
would he go a little shy? He could save money by finding a 1.90, perhaps and it would look like a2 carat.

Sorry just saw he said he''d take a 1.8. I''m gong to to to bed--I''m clearly useless tonight. Good ljuck.

LBV, in order to hit an H/VS2-SI2 stone in his stated budget, he''d have to compromise on less than top cut, less carat weight (around the 1.5 mark), or a combination of both.

If he wants to stick with top cut, his budget would bring him to the neighborhood of approximately 1.5, I, SI1.

Look up a jeweler named ID Jewelery in NYC. I recently purchased a GIA 1.7, vs2, I color, ex, vg, ex, for right around your price. The stone looks perfect! You would be able to find a 2k plus if you were willing to sacrifice the clarity or cut, but you shouldnt.
