I am planning on spending about $12,000, give or take a thousand or so. Right now, I''m looking at 1.7 carat round diamonds, with an H color, VS1 or 2 clarity and and AGS 0 or 1.

Question-is this the right "mix" for a quality diamond for the price? I assumed a lower color due to higher clarity. Also, is an AGS 1 okay versus AGS zero? Should I lower all expectations to get a 2.0 carat?

Help! Time is running out for me!!!!

I would rather go for a stone with a nice HCA score (and preferanbly more data on light return) rather than base the decision on the GAS grades alone. AGS0 can still turn out not-so-bright and AGS1 allows for lots of variation in light return.

I would consider VS2/SI1 clarity and G/H color. A stone with medium fluorescence wold make a good buy with these specs.

Hope some suggestions would come along the thread... if you have any use of such. Are you considering buying this one online?

Yes, I have found a few close on line. Two I have found have scored a 2.1 and 1.9 respectively, the former was listed as an AGS 1, while the latter was an AGS 0.

The two HCA scores are two close to differentiate the stones. These would both be top brilliant stones. After all, any had delimitation of such cut grades will be a tad gratuitous. The diamond probably has no idea what AGS grade it received

Ha! We think alike. The first one you mentioned was one of my current choices. I am comparing it to this one:

The latter has the 2.1. Comments?

Hello Spartans -
You indicated you are looking for a 1.7ct stone - any reason. Does it have to be a specific ct. weight or are you looking for a certain spread/diameter on it?

The middle stone, the 1.65 H SI...I was eyeballing that one. If you use the Sarin results for HCA score, its 1.7 vs 2.1 I think. So there is always a range because the numbers may be different.

The stones are so much alike! There would be no difference in size, color, visible clarity and not much of a price difference... the HCA scores sound good. And - lucky that - both scores are just about as senzitive to small variations in the crown and pavilion angles (since those are averages it is worth checking, I guess).

There is one difference between these two - the table size are teh most 'different' measures between the two right at the extremes of the 'ideal' range, if anything.

You may as well just get the stone from the seller you are most confortable buying from. The one thing would tell these aprt is an Iscope. I'd love to see one from both BN and DCD.
