My mom went to Alderwood mall and bought a 1.65ct diamond ring in Helzberg jewelry store. It has a IGI certificate and set in a 14k yellow gold. mom paid $7000 included tax. measurement: 7.31-7.35x4.75mm. polish and symmetry was good/good, has medium blue flurescence. there is no talbe and deep %, as I guss the table is around 56% girdle maybe medium w/fac. It looks eyeclean from the top view, but if u go down to up u can see the impurities.
Anybody can help was it too expensive? or the price soso. waiting~~~~~~~~~~~~ HELP~~~~~~~~

It must be an in mount appraisal not a certificate because certs never ever have split grades. No one can give you an appraisal over the web from the info you have. IGI appraisals are designed to give high retail values - unfortunatly these are often used by retailers as a value from which to establish a was-is-price.

What should we do? I am really not like this diamond ring, but mom does. I would like to return it or exchange to a GIA or AGS certificate diamond if the price are okey. I searched online and the price was so cheap.......... even plus the semi...... oh, my god! the diamond looks cloudy blue under the light.

I think she probably overpaid since it is likely a poor cut AND if it''s an I1 or I2 the inclusions are probably as noticeable as day. I would return it even if it meant sacrificing a bit of size because the result will be SO SO much sparklier just due to a gorgeous cut.

If it is your Mom's ring and she is the one who likes it and wants to wear it, then that is the main thing. It is very difficult to say whether you paid too much, buying with a jeweller is normally more expensive than online. It could be the fluorescence making it look cloudy, but there could be many factors such as the cut, inclusions in this low clarity grade etc. If your Mom is happy and feels her money is well spent then fine, obviously she could get far better for cut and clarity but she would most probably have to go considerably smaller for that budget. A good 1.6+ is starting in double figures and upwards to give you some idea.

When I was looking at that store for diamond studs (just to get an idea of the size I wanted), I saw that their prices were awful compared to online. I am a bad one to answer this, though, because there is no way on earth I''d pay thousands of dollars for an I1 or 2 diamond!!! I''d rather have one half the size that was well cut and at least eye-clean SI!

Hi,
I''m familiar with Alderwood mall

and have viewed Helzberg diamonds. They do have some well-cut stones of GREAT quality, but they''re very expensive. There is a viewing room where you can go into and view diamonds under their viewer and check for light leakage so at least some of the employees there are aware of what makes a great diamond. If you decide to go back, you may want to consider viewing the diamond your mom got to see how well it''s cut.

That said, paying $7K for an I1-I2 is a bit too much. You can find much better deals online. Like I said, I live nearby there and decided to purchase online since the deals and quality of diamonds is superior.

If your mom wants a sparkler at a great price, I''d suggest Wink at http://www.winkjones.com/specials/sa_diamonds.php
Check out the 1.56 J VS1 AGS1 (EX for polish rather than Ideal) for under $9K. He might have more available now. I''d much prefer Winks specials than a Helzberg diamond.

However, if she is happy with her diamond, then it''s best to just let it go. After all, she paid for it and she''s the one wearing it.

$7K for an I1/I2 stone is not a great deal. RU486, if you go up to the top of the screen, use the "pricescope your diamond" function (or go to blue nile) to see what comparable pricing may be (albeit internet is less expensive than B&M). Unfortunately, a quick search didn''t even show any I2 diamonds, but 1.6 carat H/I1 with an EGL cert runs about 4500-5700.

Well, it depends on who will be the one wearing the diamond. If it''s you and you hate it, return it. If it''s your mother and she not only loves her purchase but is getting annoyed with your research, perhaps it would be best to let sleeping dogs lie. If its "mind clean" to her and she doesn''t want to hear anything otherwise, well, you''ve heard the old saying about ignorance being bliss.

The problem is I paid the money! it was a gift for her, and make her happy.

Then why did you pay for it? Tell her you can and will get her a better stone. Did she buy it for herself then "back charged" it to you since it is a gift from you to her?

I am a newbie to the diamond, and I would like to make her happy what''s why I paid for it. Recently, I hate the ring at all and everybody at home said it''s urgly.(strong blue cloudy view under the sunlight, u wouldn''t see it in the store. It''s really pretty one in the store.) I would Return it !!! Return it!!!

It is very unusual for a medium blue fluorescence stone to look milky/cloudy/oily. But if it looks that way, then I would return the stone. If it just looks blue, I''d keep it because I like the lavender look under strong sunlight. Maybe your mom likes it too? Your best bet is to talk to her to find out what she likes about the stone and explain your opinion, if it bothers you that much..

PLEASE return that ring while you can!!! The one posted from Wink is a FAAAAAR better stone!!! Tell her you will get her one just like this one but with a better quality diamond. I promise that Wink can get you a setting just like that. And how fabulous to get an Infinity diamond at that price!!!

By the way, I didn't notice this before, but my diamond is 1.63 carats and faces up at a diameter of 7.6mm. This diamond from Helzberg faces up at 7.3mm which is the size of LESS than a 1.5 carat well cut diamond. It is probably cut too deep. So I will go back and look, but I am pretty sure the diamond from Wink would appear larger than the one she has.

Please return that diamond.

yea, I sounds like she hasn''t seen too many beautiful diamonds in her day, in which case she could well be quite happy with that one I would think. But, everything everybody else has said look to be true. Its probably got a lot of cloud type inclusions which make it look cloudy, it has the mm diameter of a smaller stone, and it was overpriced. so, if she isn''t going to hate you for taking it back and getting her something you feel is more beautiful, then I say go for it, just make sure she understands that you are doing it out of love!

What a sweet thing to do for your Mom first off. Very sweet.

It sounds like you overpaid to me. I recently purchased a 1.59 J SI2 AGS000 from WF and paid $6800. The stone is AmAzInGlY beautiful---I think it is possible to stay at or near the size you have and find a wonderfully cut stone. Just my opinion.

Any one can suggest one to me? under 7k. 1.5ct eye clean and set in 18k yellow gold with pt head. Will j color too yellowish?? SI1 or SI2?? I bought that piece for mom 50years old birthday, but it wasn't a happy thing to me.
