Shallow stones (lower left on the chart) look darker if you have excellent close up vision because your head obstructs more light sources which makes a shallow diamond appear darker. But shallow diamonds have a bigger spread, and are great for pendants and earrings, where normal social viewing distances apply.

Obstruction is an effect seen when looking at a diamond closely. The diamond may visibly darken face up as you look over it due to the shadow of your head/ body which is literally obstructing the light. Usually shallower proportioned diamonds or ones with shallower pavilion angles can be affected PA < 40.6 but it is important to evaluate each diamond carefully. Ask the vendor if it they are familiar with obstruction and whether they can see it in this particular case.
