Hello

I am doing the searching on behalf on my boyfriend.
He is not very technologically savvy and we did go into a jeweller yesterday who tried to sell us a Very Good Cut J S1 one carat round brilliant diamond for 7,000 AUD.

Being someone who always shops around I also had a chance to work in the diamond district in New York for a short time and to me this didn't sound right in what she was sayin. She said to me that the S1 doesn't matter and that its all about the cut. Not even the colour? :eh:

Ideally if this is true I have been doing some searching and I have 10,000 to play with a diamond my grandpa has put in some money too as I have Multiple Sclerosis and he knows that I have been through a lot and he loves me a lot.

Would I be able to source a 1.5 or close to a 1.5 round brilliant for the amount of money? Just the diamond?

Thank you,

Sophie

Assuming the exchange rate is 1usd to .76 aud, you're talking about 7600 usd.
Here's one I would recommend looking at. http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search?stockno=LD05465565
It's difficult to get pictures and is/aset images from bluenile, but at least you know it is possible to get a 1.5 ct round around that price point. It's tight but possible.
I'm glad you're on here asking for help. :saint:

Unfortunately, I've found that talking to salespeople in chain jewellery stores here in AUS is a little pointless. One store I visited today was selling a GIA fair I1 for $7000 AUD. She tried to tell me that clarity wasn't important to diamond performance, so long as it's cut well.. If she thinks a GIA fair is cut well, we have issues! Having said that, I've spoken to some more knowledgable higher end jewellers / manufacturing jewellers - I suppose it's the same everywhere.

Good luck with the hunt!

Okay, I will look again, but we won't be at the 1.5 ct level with $7600 US.

There's no way she can risk doing SI1 from Australia due to the difficulty returning diamonds. I strongly recommend VS2.

I also like the BN stone with the strong blue fluorescence.

Not sure I like the latter stone here. What exactly is the "patch of color" in the comments section. First one definite possibility.

While I would agree that VS2 is safer for guaranteeing eye cleanliness, I don't know that we can make the above statement without knowing the buyers preference. Is it more important that the stone be 1.5 carats or that it be eye clean from 10 inches to a person with 20/20 vision? We don't know yet because we haven't asked the buyer.

I would venture to say the majority of SI1's are eye clean, or am I wrong? To up the chances of eye cleanliness, I would look for stones with more small inclusions than one large one under the table, or with inclusions that are usually harder to see like the twinning wisps in one stone I posted.

So, OP, if you could tell us what is MOST important to you, we can better serve you.

I really have no idea what percentage of SI1's are eyeclean and I am not sure there is any scientific answer. But even if 75% were, I wouldn't want to take the chance of getting one of the 25%!

Thanks for calling my attention to the "patch of color" comment. I did not see that and it is the first time I can ever recall seeing that on a report. Wish this one had photos because I'd be very interested in seeing it!
