Hi,

I''m currently looking at a stone with the following specs:

GIA
1.78 ct.
Color: I
Clarity SI1
Depth: 62.8
Table: 55
Crown: 34.7
Pavillion: 40.8

This diamond scores a 1.5 on the HCA. But do you think I should disregard it due to the depth (62.8)?

Thanks!

What are the diameter measurements please?

Ditto, its too deep for me personally but the diameter measurements will be useful and the girdle thickness please.

Diameter:
7.70-7.76-4.85

Med to Sl. Thick

Should be ok, not too deep and overall face up size is not seriously affected.

I forgot to ask what are the polish and symmetry grades please?

As to the diameter this diamond just about gets away with the excessive depth for face up size, the polish and symmetry would be good to know to get a more complete picture. Have you seen this one in person or is it with an online vendor?

Thank you! Well you could find a diamond with a better depth and polish and symmetry grades, but overall it appears the proportions work well together. If it is with an online vendor the next step would be to get an ASET or Idealscope image of the diamond and to check it is eyeclean to your standards. What quality of cut were you hoping for, the best you can get or a ' nice make' cutwise? Or in other words do you want good or do you want great for cut?

Thanks Lorelei. I was hoping to maximize the cut quality since, as you can see, I''m compromising a bit on the color and clarity. So if this one doesn''t have a great chance of being a high performer, I''ll probably just pass on it.

This is good. VG/VG in polish and symm is un-noticeable to layman and will not seriously affect optics. And lab symmetry grade does not translate to optical symmetry. An IS/ASET image will tell more on the optical symm of the stone than just the lab grade.

It''s facing up at bit small, and I personally wouldn''t want to go that deep. 62.2 is about my own cut off. Depth can have an impact on performance/light return.

Glad to help! Really to me 62.8% depth is pushing it and goes way past my personal preference - and I am ok with a bit more depth than some, really if you want the best cut you can get I would keep looking. Top cut diamonds do not have such depths and although like I said you can just get away with the depth face up, it is a little on the small side. It might be ok for performance ( as I said previously Idealscope or ASET would help there) but really the fact remains it is deep and as Ellen says this could impact performance. VG VG polish and symmetry really isn't the issue as good and above looks the same to the naked untrained eye but that depth to me is a risk factor.

If you want, give us your budget and requirements, maybe we could hunt up some diamonds you might like?
