Hello,

I''m a newbie here and I''m shopping for a round brilliant diamond around 1.5 carats, between E-H, and VVS2 - VS2. I''ve noticed that when doing the pricescope search, that all of the diamonds for sale in this range have a cut of "very good" or better, even though (just to see) I''ve adjusted the search range to allow for "poor" cuts.

Is that because:

1) At that size, color, and clarity range - the cutters are more selective in choosing the specific stone to be cut in order to actually achieve "very good" or better, because of the profitability of said stone?

2) If a "very good" or better cut cannot be achieved, they''re better off cutting the stone to a smaller size?

3) Both 1 and 2.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Bryant

"Poor" cut stones are generally sent to a more lax grading lab so they end up getting a rating of "good" or "very good", just not from a strict lab like GIA or AGS. If you really want a well cut stone still with GIA Excellent and AGS Ideal, then learn about the HCA and run the numbers through there to make sure the cut is great. Not all GIA Ex cuts are really that great.

Poorly cut stones generally won't be sent to the GIA or AGS labs for certification. Why would the cutter pay to do that? But, poorly cut stones are certainly out there, if you want one. You just won't find them on a listing of diamonds that have been sent to the GIA and AGS labs.

There is another thread currently out here about value and size. Diamond value is mainly governed by size, color and clarity, and not so much cut. There is definitely a market for larger stones with not so great cut, but you won't be directed to one of those here on this forum.

No, usually those stones in the cut quality search are in house stones the the vendors carefully selects so you unlikely to find stones that go to below very good cuts. Actually stones at cut off ranges like 1.5c are more likely to be poorly cut as the weight above 1.5 commands a large jump in price that overcomes the price lost due to lower cut grade.

The PS community usually is looking for excellent to very good cut stones. It seems to reason that a vendor wouldn''t advertise poorly cut stones here.
