Planning to get engaged soon, and have done a bit of homework over the past couple of months … I would really appreciate any feedback or red flags regarding a diamond I am considering buying … (actually, from a family owned brick and mortar store locally with an excellent reputation; I have spent plenty of time on Blue Nile, James Allen, etc, as well) …

GIA # 2165036351 (http://www.gia.edu/report-check-landing)
Round brilliant
Measurements: 6.85 - 6.88 x 4.19 mm
Carat: 1.20
Color: H
Clarity: VS2
Cut: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very good
Fluorescence: None
Table: 58%
Depth: 61.1%
Crown angle: 34.5%
Pavilion angle: 40.8%
Girdle: thin - medium (faceted) 3.5%
Culet: None
Clarity Characteristics: one small feather, one small cloud, both near edge, no unincluded pinpoints/clouds/etc
1.4 on HCA calculator

Price: $7K (plus about $500 tax which I would not pay online). This diamond looks quite good to me. I realize I may be able to slightly undercut my pricing by buying the same diamond online, and would for a huge difference in cost, but am willing to pay some premium for my future wife to have a place in our back yard to regularly take her ring for cleaning and service.

Thanks. :)

I think it's a nice choice. Can you get an idealscope either through the vendor or a local appraiser? Or buy an idealscope yourself?

Thanks. At the moment, with my work and weekend travel schedule, I'll have a tough time getting back to the jeweler quickly. I gather that they are unlikely to have an ideal scope there, as they're not so common within the (brick and mortar) industry? I'm curious whether there is a strong feeling that this is a crucial step, given the dimensions, GIA cert, my current visual satisfaction, and the reputation of the jeweler.

By the numbers it sounds like a winner and you have already made the one step that is most required, LOOKING AT THE DIAMOND with your eyes. If you like it, it makes little difference whether we like it.

You can Contact Dave Atlas and buy your own Ideal Scope if you wish, but at this point it is not really necessary. I know that this might be considered hearsay, but if you are not looking for perfection, only beauty, you have already answered that question for YOUR needs.
