Hello, ladies! This is my first post! I am engaged and have a 1.03 ct round diamond with four .15 round side stones on either side of the center stone. While this setting is thick (about 3.5 mm) I absolutely adored it. Now that I have been trying on wedding bands, I feel as though I do not adore it AS MUCH with a wedding band next to it. I feel as though my center stone gets "drowned out" by the sidestones AND band (I am looking at a band with .07 diamonds- half eternity). I am thinking about having my setting altered - I want to keep the same style, but have the sidestones switched from .15 to .07 stones. I believe they will have to melt it down to do this... but I have not asked the jeweler yet. I thought I might see if any of you have either engagement rings or wedding bands with .07-.08 stones... OR if you have a set of both... that would be magical!!! I would love to see some before I go to the jeweler and price things out (he will definitely think I'm crazy after it took me so long to find a setting I loved).

Thanks!!! :)

Here are two pictures of my ring, I hope I attached them correctly.

fixed it!!

Your ring is beautiful! I can see, though, why it would be hard to match a wedding band with it.

I am afraid that it would require making a whole new ring, and they would be justified in charging you the full price of the new ring minus the diamonds you trade in and the value of the metal. You are finding out the hard way that it is important to figure out the wedding band before having a custom ring made to be sure the two rings will work together.

There are many sets that have been posted here with diamonds on the shanks of both rings (see the Show Me the Bling forum). You do have to be very careful that the diamonds of the two rings cannot touch because they can chip if they hit each other.

I would recommend going to try on some sets before ordering a new ring to be made to be sure of the size you really want.

It's a stunning ring!! Like DS said I'd figure out what you like as a set before you change your ERing.

Thank you, both!!! I am definitely planning on trying on sets at the jeweler, but feel a little bit self conscious about wanting to change it after it took forever to find this one, and fawning over it! I would love to see some pictures of other people's rings, first!! I have tried some bands, and am partial to thinner bands, so the engagement ring is still the "star." I will attach a picture of one that I like the best. I am also ordering a few rings to "try for free" from Eternity Diamonds to see the width before I go to the jeweler as well.

Let me know what you think!!

Also, my other idea is to just get a new setting.... and have this one turned into a second wedding band and have another diamond put in where the head is(to wear alone when I don't want to wear my set... or as a RHR if I want more bling!). That way I still have the ring (sentimental reasons, and it was a great deal, not worth it to lose out!).

What do you think?

Thank you for your reply! There are some very lovely rings on that site. The last picture I posted had .07 diamonds... not sure on the width. When I tried on bands that were thinner, they disappeared next to my e-ring. Also, I would like my band to be tall to match my engagement ring, and if the diamonds are smaller than .02 (I believe) they will not be able to set them high to match!!

I do love my ring... but I really want to maximize the visual size of the center stone. My fiance is opposed to trading it for something larger in the future, and I don't foresee us having enough extra cash to get a larger stone... so I want to fight off future diamond shrinkage now!! ;) haha

If your goal is to maximize the size of your center stone and your DH doesn't want to upgrade in the future, I would have a new setting made now with the 0.07ct stones or you may regret it later. I honestly don't think the larger diamonds in your band look bad next to your center stone, its the chunky metal pieces (not sure what they're called) next to the diamonds that draw my eyes away from the center stone.

Yep, I agree. They are too similar to the width of the diamond and draw your eye away from it. I imagine that woulda happen even if it was a plain band, because instead of the entire ring pulling in and focusing on the centerstone, there are these visual breaks near the edge that cause your eye to stutter across it. If that's what you're wanting, it's great, but it may not be what you're wanting, I guess.

Honestly I think it looks great! I like the non matchy widths of the set and don't think it takes away from your stone :)

Thank, you! I actually really like the bars on the sides... but have already asked my jeweler if we can file them down to match the width of the rest of the ring. He said it would be no problem, but I didn't want to do that yet incase I decide to change the setting, because then it would just be a waste of money! At the time I would have liked to make this change but we had already increase our budget to afford this ring, and there was absolutely NO leeway money to play with! I have a week off work coming up, so I will go to my jeweler then. I found it difficult to find pictures of the ring/set I am looking for online, so I guess I will just have to wait to try it on myself. My wedding is in October, so no matter what I decide, I may wait until after the wedding to change my ring. I will still get a .07 (with about 7-9 stones total) or pick a setting that will match it (so I won't have problems later) and just put it on layaway or something since my jeweler recommended that so they can hold the ring for me. Oh gosh, first world problems!!

What size stones have you requested from Eternity diamonds for the free try on's? The diamond band you have shown looks lovely --- but would you even consider something a little smaller? Maybe 5pointers perhaps? You want the ering to be the star of the show and a thin band (7 - 9 stone) would give you that effect.
OR
could you have 5 x 5 points set so they sit in between the vertical 'bands' on your ering?

I have requested three rings - all with 1ct center stone... I BELIEVE one setting had .06 stones, one had .05, and one with .03. One of them comes with a wedding band as well. What do you mean by 5x5? I'm so confused about what I want. I feel somewhat bad about changing my ring, but at the same time I want to the set to look a bit better!!! I can't wait to try on the replica rings... and get a little bit of an idea before I go to the jeweler!! Thanks!

a 5 stone ring made w .05 stones - .25tcw. Just thinking the size of the .05's (5 pointers) would fit between the bands in your existing ring. GIves you bling, but appears like it was made for your ering.

This may allow you to keep your original ering.

You have a lot of options on the go! It is hard to decide what to do but trying lots of rings on will help you decide. Good luck

Oh, I LOVE the idea of making this an alternate standalone wedding band by taking out the center stone and filling in with a .15 (or two)! Then you could start over and just get a set that matches which really does look best with that type of e-ring, I think.

love this idea.

I really like your current setting. My thought is that you should not do a diamond wedding band. You say you found the setting - if it's not custom, is there a matching band? I'd try on plain bands, bands with engraving (maybe an antique-repro floral motif), and see if you can find or design a band that has the horizontal lines that I think I see on the shank of your setting, maybe with cross- bars like on the shank of your e-ring but set to nestle up on either side of your center diamond.

Thanks so much, I'm not interested in a plain band, I definitely want diamonds!! :) I'm not sure if it "comes" with a matching band, but m jeweler said they can make one no problem. I'm just not sure if I want that... I need to price out everything first, this wedding is getting pricey itself!

Thanks! Do you think I should leave it as-is? Just get the bars shaved down?

I think you should keep it as is- you lived and adored it and searched forever for it and stretched your budget :) I honestly like the nonmatching widths and I like your setting! If you want you could move your ERing to your right hand and wear your wedding band alone on your left hand if you don't want to wear them together.

I think this is what I would do. You love your e-ring already and I honestly think the wedding band would look great with your e-ring if the metal was shaved down a bit. I don't like the wedding band to be too matchy anyways. Besides, if you got the wedding band in the same width as your e-ring band, I think it might overpower your e-ring.

Thanks!! I am going to still think about it and see how I feel when I try on different rings/sets. I think I will know what I want to do when I try them on and have a pull towards something!!!

Honestly, I love them together! Tons o' bling!

agreed.

I actually really really like them together. Your e-ring is magnificent so it very much holds its own against the diamond band, which is the perfect compliment IMHO. Plus the band would look gorgeous and elegant when worn alone too!

Thank you!!! You guys are making me feel much better about my ring and prospective set! I am going to ask if it is possible to have a few smaller diamonds set without melting anything down and go from there. If it is not possible, I think I will be very happy with keeping the ring the way it is. Thanks a lot, everyone!
