Hi everyone,

I''m just wondering if a round brilliant diamond, which scored a 0.9 on the HCA will mean that is it no-doubtly a spectacular diamond?

I''m asking because I don''t have any more information except for the dimensions.

Thanks everyone!

No. The HCA is a stone weeder-outer, not a stone picker.

:) is absolutely right. Use the HCA only to reject stones scoring over 2 as a general rule.

Anything under two is worth considering - but there are other factors too.

Firstly, the HCA cannot take the thickness (or thinness) of the girdle into consideration, and extremes of girdle thickness are best avoided.

The HCA is also unable to consider the clarity of the stone, and whether it has eye visible inclusions, or inclusions which might impact on the light performance, appearance or structural integrity of the diamond.

It''s a great tool, but other tools like Idealscope images (and eyes!) are important too.

If you can post a link to the stone you''re considering (if it''s online) and an Idealscope image if possible, then we can help tell you if your diamond would be a good choice.

L and C are right, also an Idealscope image would be very useful if you can get one for this diamond.

All that advice is true - it could be a black diamond, be painted or dug, the data could have been typo''ed etc.
It means "look further, this could be the one!"

You give us total depth %
You input table and crown angle (means we calculate crown height)
You give us pavilion angle (we calc pav depth).
Total depth% minus (pav and crown%) = girdle thickness.

We warn you if it is too thin or too thick

The report states that this is an excellent cut diamond. So that means I shouldn''t have to worry much about the fire/brilliance/sparkle of this diamond?

This diamond is a very well cut diamond, it should be a superb performer - no worries!

I''ve looked at 30 or so large diamonds in the past several months.. I created a spreadsheet, and one of the columns was HCA score.. I scored the diamonds before I went to look at them.. In most all cases, diamonds that scored below 2 on the HCA were much more appealing to me.. They had more sparkle, brilliance, fire, scintilation, etc.. They clearly outperformed stones that I placed next to them with scores in the 4-5 range. Of course, I''m talking about the beauty of the stones, not clarity or color.. I have seen K-L colored stones, with HCA below 1, and they were beautiful to look at.. Stunning... They had obvious color compared to G-H stones, but they were very pretty to the eyes..
