0.8 - 1.2% Girdle too Thin?

Hi

I''m considering a stone with a girdle of 0.8 - 1.2%. Will this have long term durability issues? Accident waiting to happen?

Not only do I not want my diamond to ever chip, but I''d also want it to remain in saleable condition (in case I want to trade-up or resell the rock). The diamond will be in a six-prong setting.

Any opinions greatly appreciated

echelon, I can't remember how to figure out the girdle measurement to ex thin, thin, med etc from the figure given, so no help there LOL, but I just wanted to say that you cannot guarantee that a diamond won't chip anywhere or even break, mishaps are very rare and I understand you wanting to avoid them, but you can only do so much. If the diamond in question has a very thin or extremely thin part of the girdle and shallow crown angle, then you need an expert to look at the diamond to advise you, or avoid it altogether and choose another. A diamond with a very thin or extremely thin part of the girdle * may* be more prone to chipping, but again you need an expert to examine the particular diamond. Many prefer a 6 prong setting as they feel it protects the diamond better. Also whatever you do, insure! We had a poor PSer accidentally hit a shopping cart with her rock a while back, it broke in 2 pieces

, rare but it can happen.
As to resale, it is best to buy from a vendor with an upgrade policy, trying to resell your own jewellery can be a frustrating business with the seller being lucky to recoup 50% of the original purchase price, so a vendor offering an upgrade policy may be the best way to go.

the girdle on my stone is .7-1.2. it''s listed on the report as thin...it''s stones with ex. thin that you''d have to be more concerned about and many try to avoid. Lorelei is correct that chipping can happen to any stone if it''s bangs just right. Make sure the ring is insured..

Ditto, if it is GIA excellent cut or AGS0 cut, I doubt the girdle is extremely thin.

0.8% of 7.49 = 0.6mm. Since it''s a somewhat large stone, would an AGS "thin" be safer since AGS measures girdles in terms of %?

I don''t want to merely rely on insurance, as I prefer no chipping at all...

I think most folks prefer no chipping at all

. I think your girdle will be fine and in a 6 prong setting you *should* be ok. you could always select a bezel setting if you want to ensure no chipping of your stone because in a bezel it would be completely protected..

ETA: thin to med- is the ideal range for a girlde on a round stone...any thicker and you'll loose carat weight in the depth of the stone and it will face up smaller than it should

Im just worried about the durability of a 0.8% girdle set in a 6 prong. Given that the stone is 7.5mm in diameter, 0.8% of that = 0.6mm - can I derive some comfort from this fact? Or should girdle %s be followed instead?

well, I don''t know if it will make you feel any better but my stone is also 1.5 carats and an AGS000. The stone you''re looking at is one of the cream of the crop being and AGS000. I seriously would not worry about the girdle on this stone...

i hope others will chime in to help give you some peace of mind...
