Hey everyone. Looking to buy an engagement ring in the .7-.9 carat range. I’ve done some research on 4Cs and understand that not all excellent cuts are created equal. I don’t think I need the best of the best cut but do want it to be nice. The jeweler offered one diamond below at .9 carats and I wondered how it compares to the .76 carat better cut diamond I was able to find online.

Assuming the price is the same which one would be the better buy?

Thanks!

Lots of red flags with number 1.
Number 2 much better. What do your eyes tell you?

What's the asking price?

Edit: just saw that you've only seen diamond 1 in person. Run away from it

#1 is bad. Look at the spread, 6.0xmm. Bascially, you are paying 0.90c money for 0.80c size. 0.90c should be about 6.20mm in diameter. Not a good deal, not to mention the too steep crown and too shallow pavilion angle.

I haven’t actually seen #1 yet. They just said it looks great and sent a picture of the cert. But I’m sceptical with the only very good cut and the high depth...

#2 I’ve seen a photo of online and it looks nice and eye clean.

Also with a .75 carat diamond will you be able to tell a difference between an excellent and very good or is it small enough that they all look the same?

Thanks!

There are many factors considered when a cut grade is assigned: depth, angle, girdle thickness, girdle treatment, symmetry, polish, etc.... There are some very good cut stones that look as good as, or even better than some excellent cut stones.
However, in this case, without going into much detail, for #1 and #2, these are night and day different, at least to me.
#1 will look similar to this, which you may think it is ok. But the black arrows (obstruction) really persist even if you increase the viewing distance and appear dark, mainly because of 40.4 pavilion angle. . Plus, it may be leaky under the table.

Night and day in that 2 is better than 1 or are you saying it’s impossible to tell without seeing the stones?

I don't like cloud in si2 as one of main inclusions.

The 40.4 pavilion can cause obstruction issues as alluded to above.

The 64.6% depth means the the 6.02 spread is about right for a 0.8 carat, not a 0.9. A 0.9ct should face up about 0.25mm more, which is very visually significant.

38/40.4 combo may be very pretty as far as very good cut goes, but assuming you are not a man of very specific taste for FICs and you have searched long and hard for one, I would play it safe and get a diamond more in line with the 0.76 you found.

There are too many potential problems with the 0.9 that you may not realise even when you go to see it, until you compare it with seasoned cuts of diamonds later on.

But it's exclude it on the clarity profile alone.

Absolutely no to #1. You are paying for a .9 that has the size of a .8. even in under 1ct stones, cut is King. #2 is a million times better. Not even in the same ballpark.

Is there any reason it has to be either of those? Pretty sure we could find you something better and more to your liking if you were open to some assistance! :wavey:

Thanks everyone for your help. I’ve been traveling so it was hard to update. I’ve rejected diamond 1 and reiterated with the jeweler the specifications that I am looking for they are checking to see if they can find anything better suited by the end of the week and if not I’ll go online. Thanks again for the help and I’ll definitely reach out again if the next decision feels off too.
