You''ve got 5 to 10K to spend - would you buy status or "special?"

Status

If I had 10k, I would not spend the whole thing on jewelery. I''d buy MAYBE one or two small things and use the rest for something much more important, like a down payment on a house or a new car.

That said, if I didn''t have any bills and got 10k to spend on a sparkly, I''d go with special. I have no desire to own anything name-brand for a status thing, I''d rather just have something I loved. And I tend to love things that go a little bit further for my dollar

Special! I''d want more sparkle for my dollar. Thanks for the food for thought, TGal! I am having a lot of fun right now imagining what I''d do with that $5-10K . . .

I guess kind of a combo of the two. I've actually fallen in love with a few "status" pieces that I would purchase if funds allowed (Cartier love bracelet, VC&A mother of pearl and platinum necklace, Tiffany diamonds-by-the-yard, to name a few), but it's not that I'd want people to recognize and appreciate their "value" without being educated... it's that I just plain love them.

So if I had $5-10k earmarked for jewelry, it could go for any number of the things on my wishlist... including those supposed "status" pieces.

Though honestly, if I had $5-10k to spend, it probably wouldn't be on jewelry

with the recent-ish additions of my e-ring and wedding band, I'm pretty satisfied on the jewelry front... for now

Hum. I think 5-10K worth of jewelry is ''status'' no matter how you slice it (or where you buy it).

I don''t exactly agree- continuing to use Tgal''s example of her new pad sapphire. Do you think most folks have any clue how much it cost?? It''s a little different from a diamond. You can pay thousands for "just" a garnet. Not so much a status thing, in that case.

For me- special, all the way! I''d far prefer to own (steal?

and just smile to yourself that you have something pretty unique even though it will most likely not be a head turner?
I''d pick out an OEC and have it set into a vintage setting. . .not a ''status'' object, but I would hope still a head turner!

Special!

For me, I would probably get an OEC - and then put that baby in a James Meyer. Most people wouldn''t appreciate it, I think, since it''s not a traditional round (and the setting is different too) but hey, we all know OECs and James'' settings are both GORGEOUS.

It depends on the day...and the reasoning....
This sounds about right to me as well. Knee jerk reaction is something special. But, if I fell in love with something that couldn''t be replicated well...

Special!

Always special, never status, regardless of amount of money to spend or item to be purchased.

Special!! I would get the biggest stud earring I SI1 for that budget.

I''d choose special, but that''s generally my approach to everything - I vastly prefer my Rebecca Minkoff bags (retail $500-650) to more expensive and more widely recognized Louis Vuitton, both because I love the bags themselves, but also because I like having something that not everyone else is carrying.

Similarly with my diamond and tsav 5-stone ring. What I''ve been pleasantly surprised by though, is that even though I bought that ring 100% for myself and because of its special significance to me, people notice it a lot more than I thought they would, and its always fun to get a compliment on it and have an opportunity to tell the story of why its so special to me

Special - no doubt!
If you asked me before PS, I would have said otherwise.
Before PS, I was drooling over a Tiff solitaire. Now, I am dreaming up a MWM Flame with a Brian Gavin stone. To me, that would be so truly special, and well worth waiting for

Even if it takes a year or so.... that will make it all the more special.
The fact that one just can''t pull it off a shelf and purchase it adds a bit of thrill to the whole experience for me.

Special for me. If the point is to buy something that gives me joy when I wear it, I would make sure that JOY was what I thought when I looked at it, not the name (whether or not it had one) or the lack thereof.

I would like a nice watch, and would be branded and could be considered a status symbol, but if I had the money and it was what I wanted then again, it would be the joy that mattered. Other than the watch though... generally what gives me joy is bang for buck and a project. I was in Tiffany last week trying on the graduated rounds swing band and all I could think was... give these diamonds a little Miracle Grow drop a bit in color and clarity, tweak the setting a little RIGHT HERE, and you'd have something perfect... for me.

Special. I have yet to find something over $215 that I have to have that is a name brand. And I have it. Soooo....special. Yup.

something special, status means nothing to me

Mine would involve increasing the budget probably, but I am thinking one of Jon''s chunky cushions and a Van Craeynest setting!

If I HAD to choose a brand name item with the imaginary $5000, I''d rather have a Tiffany DBY necklace than the gold and onyx VCA necklace.

I would go for something special. I''d probably purchase an antique piece (Georgian, most likely) because I LOVE the idea of having something SO old and that comes with its own stories and memories.

I would go with special. I am not a brand girl unless I know a certain brand means reliability as in a reliable appliance or piece of electronic equipment.

are special and status mutually exclusive? If we''re talking about something that''s going to cost $5,000-$10,000 there''s going to be some amount of status involved, because not everyone is going to be able to afford it.

Ok ... I really think you "special" people are fooling yourselves that the 5-10K item isn''t *also* a status item. Maybe the poll should be "name brand" vs. "generic" ... because all these honking 1.5+ antique stones aren''t going to be "fooling" anyone about their cost like *maybe*, *MAYBE* a Pap sapph could.

And if I selected a name-brand 5-10K item, it would be pretty damn "special" to me.
