1972 - Bloody Friday bombing by the Provisional Irish Republican Army around Belfast, Northern Ireland - 22 bomb explosions, 9 people killed and 130 people seriously injured.


1877 - After rioting by Baltimore and Ohio Railroad workers and the deaths of nine rail workers at the hands of the Maryland militia, workers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania stage a sympathy strike that is met with an assault by the state militia.

1873 - At Adair, Iowa, Jesse James and the James-Younger gang pull off the first successful train robbery in the American West.

1861 - American Civil War: First Battle of Bull Run - at Manassas Junction, Virginia, the first major battle of the war begins. The Confederate won.

Czech Republic - "National Love Day" – couples tend to flock to the memorial of the poet Karel Hynek Mácha in Prague and kiss.
Lei Day - Hawaiian holiday for the Lei.
Beltane, Lá Bealtaine, the first day of Summer in modern Ireland was celebrated by the Celts, and is now also celebrated by Neopagans and Wiccans.
Northern Europe - Walpurgis Night.
Roman Empire - all-female festival in honour of Bona Dea.
Roman Empire - fourth and last day of the Floralia in honour of Flora.

I obvously knew it was May Day, which I was somewhat cool with. I have this funny picture in my head of my FI at the alter yelling "May-Day, May-Day" and trying to run away as I'm walking down the aisle.

I'm really not stoked about Holocaust Rememberance day. It's a long story, but I find it really ironic that it happened to fall on the day we picked.

Beltane - Cool, my mom's family is completely Irish, so I already kind of wanted some Celtic stuff in there

2004 - Australian embassy bombing: A bomb explodes outside the Australian embassy in Jakarta, killing 10 people
1993 - The Palestine Liberation Organization officially recognizes Israel as a legitimate state
1971 - The four-day Attica Prison riot begins, which eventually results in 39 dead, most killed by state troopers retaking the prison.
1965 - Hurricane Betsy makes its second landfall near New Orleans, Louisiana, leaving 76 dead and $1.42 billion ($10-12 billion in 2005 dollars) in damages
1956 - Elvis Presley appears on The Ed Sullivan Show for the first time.

When we announced we''re getting married on September 9 people were like: "Now why would you choose THAT day?!" lol We had to do a lot of explaining that it wasn''t on purpose but just a funny coincidence.
