If you are are a girl that was lucky enough to pick out her engagement ring, or help in the selection process, at what point did you know it was the one? Did you have an ah-ha moment?

I saw a photo online of a 5ct pink pear halo ring in white gold/platinum like this one: and fell in love with the style immediately! From that point I knew I had to have a pear halo e-ring. At first I was going for a yellow or pink stone but then decided for my budget I would rather have size over color and went with white instead.

When my husband gave it to me. He did a great job picking it out. I wore it 16 years. Then we got a new ring and diamond.

seeing the stone IRL made it a no-brainer. it was "me".
now the setting was a whole 'nother bowl of chili....that took 8 months to commit to and even then i was worried i had made the wrong decision.

Sorry for the novel! I was positive that I didn't want a RB. I had been looking at emerald cuts and asschers. I realized that as much as I loved them though, the square shape didn't look great on me. I was considering solitaires but I kept thinking that something was missing every time I tried on settings, so I decided to go with a three stone ring. Plus, I had seen Kaleigh's three stone and other PSers with the same look, and I knew it was what I wanted.

I ran across this setting (the Leah) from Knox Jewelers in MN and LOVED it. I had been all over the place in terms of figuring out what I wanted, but when I saw this, I had to have it. I loved the trellis setting (not shown below). I had finally found the look I wanted and the swoopy prongs I'm crazy about. I contacted Knox for a quote but they were a bit higher than we wanted to go. We ended up going with WF and I love my ring. I do wish we could have gone up in ctw for each diamond but we did what we could at the time. I decided to go with all diamonds instead of having sapphires as shown, but I still LOVE the way the Leah from Knox looks.

DH and I designed mine together - the whole process took around 5 months.

He proposed without the ring (but with a scrabble board  ) so there wasn't a big rush!

I knew the stone was mine as soon as I saw it on the video-link. The setting was a nightmare - and I second-guessed it a bit during the process. I like the look of micropave best but it's not that practical especially if you want a matching band so I went with graduated channel-setting instead.

Anyway, I love what we came up with and would never change it.

We were just browsing the Tacori website and I saw one that I really liked because it reminded me of an awesome RHR I have. I told him I loved it and he offered we go see it in person for fun. Then, he told me that while alone he found an even nicer one on the website. I saw it on the site and I did like it but I bet him that mine would be prettier in person. When we finally went to go see both, it wasn't even a question - he won the 'bet' and the one he picked was much more beautiful. I didn't even bother looking at other rings while I waited 8 months for him to propose.

I love the ring, I can see why you did too! What a great inspiration piece. 8)

I'm a sucker for fishtail prongs: almost every ring I've picked out has had them. Before I saw my setting, I'd been planning on a bezel, but once I set eyes on my setting? It was, oh, maybe 120 seconds before it was mine, all mine.

S'okay. I'm going to reset my anniversary ring into a bezel for parity (and to humor my husband, who thinks it looks silly to have such similar settings on both hands - having worn them like this for a week, I'll give him his due!). That one, it took me ... hm, 4 months to decide on? I'd had a picture of the setting in my little inspiration folder for, like, a year, but I didn't really fall for it until I saw it in person. And then, again, it was a matter of immediate decision. I tend to be a cautious bargain hunter right up until the moment I'm an impulse buyer, I guess .... :rodent:

Hi Marcy,
I'm so glad he did a great job! :appl: That's the best of both worlds; one from him and an upgrade you picked together. =)

Part of me would have liked a 'surprise' proposal and not just the casual conversation, but I also like that I have a ring I am very happy with. I'm not very good at hiding my emotions... in case I would have not liked what he had chosen. :halo:

I agree, seeing the stone in person does help a lot. At first I was frustrated because I wasn't 'wowed' by any of them; they were all just okay. Once I saw mine however I fell in love and knew it was the one! :twirl: :twirl:

That is so sweet!  That's nice that you picked something out together, even if it did take several months. =)
I too had a proposal without a ring, but that's because I couldn't decide what I wanted!

I had an ah hah moment when I tried the Lucida on. And then when I saw the Dream Cut by HOF. But I wanted over a carat in size and it was out of the budget with either of those. So I thought I'd be happy with an asscher (cut cornered square) but I'd only seen them on the screen not in real life. And it turns out I wasn't initially fine with it though because asschers face up small for their carat weight (like most squares) and also because they get dirty easy AND because the step cut faceting really draws your eye in kinda making the stone look very small. I didn't know any of that when I asked for one. So although it was a gorgeous asscher I didn't fall in love with it for years.

But it was my forever stone because my DH proposed with it. In a temp setting (which is what I asked for).

Then I tried lots of different settings and it took a long time for me (years) to find the exact right one. Last year I got my setting's halo redone by Steven Kirsch and fell absolutely head over heels.

I adore my ring now. It's not just the style. My ring style hasn't changed in 4 years. It's also the execution, Steven's execution of the style is so much more delicate and elegant than my original. My setting right now is fabulous and it suits my stone 1000% and suits me as well.

Sometimes it takes a LOT of time to get things right. And that's okay.

BIGGEST PIECE OF ADVICE: Try EVERYTHING on. Any thing you are even considering, try on your hand. Because I loved a LOT of styles (east west ovals) that look terrible on my hand and also that I just don't care for in real life but like on the screen (Verragio settings). Even if you buy from the net, get a great return policy and see it in person before commiting-- especially to an expensive custom setting. Try anything you can that's close to what you want. See it actually on before you buy it permanently.

I designed my original myself and had it made, even when I got it I was STILL wondering if I had chosen the right one! I think that says more about my decision making skills than the ring though  .

About 2 days after I got it. When we went in to buy it, I was torn between a round and a princess (basically same specs except for cut since there was no cut grade for my princess, and same setting). So I agreed with the store manager that I could walk out with the princess and have one week to change my mind and get the round. Two days later I knew the princess and I had mated for life

I knew that I wanted a 2nd hand ring and he set a budget. We looked online at all the typical places and when we found one that we could agree on, he bought it. I wan't aware of that at the time though and he later surprised me with it.

Our picking a ring was entirely down to budget. It clicked when everything lined up: not a solitaire, near colourless, about 1/2 carat, and under budget.

We did not try on rings at all together and did all our shopping online while a few thousands miles away from each other. It's a pretty ring.

We had bought a couple of pieces from James Meyer and loved his work and trusted his aesthetic completely, so when a cushion vine and leaf ring came up we were both impressed.

It was fractionally over budget, and I was worried the stone might be too big for my life style (1.40ct) so I played around with the sticky edge of post-its and fine gauge rulers and scissors  And heard from some very helpful Pricescopers about the height of James' platform rings.

It was a touch over price, but we could meet the extra without pinching anywhere so we went ahead (I say we because I'm contributing - I insisted on this because we a clear idea of what was reasonable budget for him and anything over that I really felt was for me to cover)

Its here, now, somewhere in the room I think - arrrrgh. The wait is killing me. We have a joke that the whole subject was never broached, 'ring what ring' sort of thing, so he gets his moment with the proposal. He did just confirm that it is even more wonderful in real life.

So yes, love at first site, but questions and a lot of hard thinking before going ahead.

I love James Meyer - looking forward to seeing pictures of the ring when he proposes. I have no idea how you are managing to hold out knowing its in the house!

can't wait to see it!!!

I knew it was the one when we walked out of the shop and sat in the car and I realised I'd be upset if someone else bought it.

The moment I saw it. I knew I wanted a something a bit more than a solitaire, but not much more. The moment I saw it, that was that.

After years of looking at thousands of rings online, a Tacori design caught my eye. (Most of the Tacoris I had seen up 'til then had been too ornate for my tastes, as though they were trying too hard to be impressive . . . you know?) This design was simple, elegant, and the perfect blend of classic and vintage-y-ness.

We had plans to visit a store the next day which carried the Tacori designs. As soon as I put this sample ring on my finger, I knew. It was The One. It still is.

My DH picked mine, and it wasn't anything like what I thought I wanted, but it turns out I love it.

I went with a friend to get his ring for his fiancée, and looking at princess cut stones, I found that I like my unique classica cut a lot better. I also love the setting I got. I guess it took looking at all of the options to truly realize what a great job he did! I love my ring and I still stare at it all the time because it's so sparkly, and if I were let loose in the store to pick my own ring I'd probably end up with something very similar if not the exact same one.
