In the 60s I got a pair of "granny glasses" with rectangular yellow lenses and plastic hearts at the ends that go behind your ears.

Though not Catholic, I had to have a St. Christopher necklace round with colored enamel from the dime store.
Trolls were also popular.

You had to 'ring up' the Operator to complete your call.

Some of those operators listened in on 'prime callers' and knew the town news before it hit the newspapers.
i was a long distance switchboard operator in 1979.

Oh!!! totally remember those, Kenny!!! I always wanted an easy bake oven... who doesn't love a cake baked by a light bulb??? That's fine cuisine at that age! ;))
i remember that was like 1969?..

Easy Bake was earlier in the sixties. I had one when I was about 10.

My grandmother had a metallic blue with baby blue pleather interior Ford Pinto. She LOVED that car!

My Vinny Bobarino (sp?) lunchbox!

Computer punch cards.

RIding on the arm rest in the middle of the front seat of the car.

The microwaves where you turned the dial to set the cooking time.

Shrinky Dinks! Do they still make those? One time I dropped a still-hot one on our poor dog Peppy and it stuck to his fur when it cooled. He wasn't hurt at all, but he had some sort of super hero stuck on his back and my grandmother had to cut it off with scissors. Neither one of them was amused.

collecting go-go rings that you got from gumball-style machines.

when speaking on the phone... holding that heavy ear piece to your ear with one hand and the heavy mouth piece with your other hand.

Nah, you ain't that old either DF! We had a phone receiver - all one piece - you weren't around in the days of THOSE phones!
in 1966 grandpa had one in his house but maybe it wasn't connected?.. i remember playing around with it.

Roller skates with metal wheels, leather straps, and keys.

"Sidewalk surfboards."

Kids playing outside with friends until parents called them in to dinner... and again after dinner until their parents called them in for the night... and then begging to be allowed to play outside "for just a few minutes more."

I can't compete with these memories, but wanted to add in about Chatty Cathy. She was popular during my mother's childhood...but my mom grew up very poor. No Chatty Cathy for her. I remember through my whole childhood, if I whinged about not getting something I really, really wanted, she would always retort with, "Well I never got my Chatty Cathy, now did I?"

I fixed that. When I was about 20, I bought one for her off Ebay. She was beautiful, had a gorgeous lavender dress and accessories, and talked perfectly. Now I NEVER have to hear about her not getting Chatty Cathy again!

The one with Veronica etc would be Archie... a comic book that actually spawned a "band" called the Archies with a hit song appropriately called "Sugar Sugar." I don't think they ever went on tour though. :wink2:

I had to laugh at your reference to the Partridge Family... A few weeks ago I was asked to usher for an upcoming musical theater show of "The Music Man." I had planned to pass on that show because ushering for it would sort of cramp other plans for that day, and because I thought I'd already seen a lifetimes's worth of "The Music Man." :wink2: Then I someone told me the production featured Shirley Jones and David Cassidy!!! How could I pass on seeing these two together again - especially David Cassidy??? Sign me up to usher!!!!!

Turns out they got it wrong... the star is someone named Patrick Cassidy. :snore:

Bobby Sherman, Donny Osmond, Michael Jackson!! And the cartoons that were based on those guys and their shows. "hey hey hey" from Fat Albert! Scoobie Doo! Casper the Friendly Ghost

Remember that powdered hair spray stuff to 'wash' your hair? Psssssst!!

Bubble shirts - the height of style, which went well with the white go go boots and micro mini skirts, then maxi skirts, and midi's.

Virginia SLims smoking commercials and ads - how sexy and attractive it was to have a slim cigarette for women!

i remember the Winston commercial on TV..."Winston taste good like a cigarette should"

I had an EZ Bake in the late 70's. My mom promptly took it away from me though because I never cleaned up my mess. I was right smack dab in the middle of the Cabbage Patch Kids/Garbage Pail Kids craze too. My best memory is of my mom walking up the walkway to our place with a CPK in front of her because she knew I could see her from our window. I loved the stuffing out of that thing - literally.

I remember 45rpm records.

I remember when FM radio was "new" and "innovative", and there were very few FM stations in the country.

I saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan.

The first movie I went to was Mary Poppins.

When I started driving, car prices averaged UNDER $3000.00. Way under. 3K was an expensive ride.

I wore platforms and wedgies and boho hippie chick clothes the first time.

The first time I took college courses, I was in "computer programming" where we used IBM punch cards. Steve and Bill had not yet invented squat. They were probably still in high school.

Chrissy dolls where her hair could grow out of her head, click clacks and the Helms Bakery truck that drove through the neighborhood. They would open up the back and pull out drawers of bread and doughnuts. I have never gotten over that.

I remember when Southern California was mostly orange groves. When the Brea mall was not even built and the farthest Imperial Hwy went was to the A&W, where they would come to your car on roller skates (For all the southern CA pricescopers!)

When i couldn't wear pants to school and had to wear dresses to public elementary school.

When the freeways weren't crowded.

I still HAVE my Easybake oven. In our shed somewhere...or the attic.

I had a pair of cat-eye pale turquoise glasses at age 5. Stylin'.

Our neighbors had a '59? De Soto. Fins so big on the back that it looked like it should fly. Pale yellow with a black top. WE had a 1965 Pontiac Bonneville. HUUUGE long RED car with black vinyl interior  and chromed everything, and an intermittent AC. The whole interior designed to burn you to a crisp in the summer.

I remember watching the moon landing with great interest, and being impatient for them to finally LAND the darn thing.

Giant Pixie Stix were almost bigger than ME. ;-) And 25 cents got you an incredible candy haul.

Patent leather shoes!! I always got a pair that matched my Easter dress, because hey! they had them in lots of colors, all the time!

The first songs I remember from the radio: Spinning Wheel by BS&T and American Pie. ;))

I love some of the memories that these threads have but am struck by one sad note. . . many remember wanting things that they did not get. That was part of growing up and you learned to deal with the disappointment and didn't grow up to be an ax murderer. Today's kids by and large get everything they want - they have parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles that make SURE they get it all. . . they're so much poorer than we were because they never learn to deal with disappointment. . . it's all about immediate gratification. As a brand new grandmother, I'm going to have to remember this. I love her so much that I would absolutely want her to have what she wants and maybe as a grandmother I'm entitled to spoil her a bit. However, it is also invaluable to not get it all - builds some character and integrity. Anyone agree?

MyDiamondSparkles, Olivia Newton John sang that song!

Ohh I remember Shrinky Dinks! I loooved those things.

My brother and I are big into nostalgic things, he moreso than I, but we send each other links to youtube all the time of old commercials that used to play during Saturday morning cartoons, and snippets from the cartoons we used to watch. He's got most of those old cartoons on dvd now.

On FB the other day was a picture of these crazy rolly scooter things we used to have in gym class-they had a little platform to sit/lay on and handles. Everyone's favorite day of gym class.

We used to play Oregon Trail in school-anyone else play that? We had one computer, a big ole monster of a thing, on a big wheeled cart that we had to push to whichever 5th grade class had their turn that day with it. The graphics were made of little squares. It was so fun!

My first real summer job working in the Northeast Warner/Elektra/ Atlantic record warehouse
as an order "picker" picking cassettes, 45's, and albums to sell to retailers.
Was paid $2.00 hr, 40 hour work week, no A/C (hot!) but great employee discounts on records.
I will always remember Glen Frey of the Eagles strolling through the warehouse during a visit
before a concert...telling everyone "I'm Glen Frey of the Eagles." Was not sure I even heard of the Eagles.
And the group Queen strolled through....those were the good old days.

ksinger, you're killing me with the turquoise cat's eye glasses! One of my good friends had light blue cat's eye glasses, and I wanted some so badly. My mother insisted that I get brown glasses. Obviously, I am still haunted by those light blue cat's eyes!

I remember the moon landing, as well. I was sitting on the floor of our den, cutting (yes, cutting, no perforations back then!) out paper dolls. I specifically remember my mother saying to me, "Remember exactly what you are doing right now...history is being made."

I remember when Cracker Jacks had a real toy, not a cheap sticker.

I remember saving up cereal box tops and sending them in for some toy.
