Wedding Would you buy the dress?

This isn''t related to me.

My best friend and I went shopping for bridesmaid dresses yesterday at David''s Bridal. She already has a great bridal dress she purchased from Nordstrom for $80 and it fits her really well. I told her that she should try on some dresses while I was trying dresses on just for fun. I know, I know Bad MOH!!!

She tried on a few and we were mainly giggling and taking photos until she tried on the dress in the attached photo. The dress looks horrible on the model, awful on the manequin but OMG!! She looked absolutely beautiful. It was sexy and elegant at the same time. She has a straight-lined body and all of a sudden, with the dress, she had a waist, hips and a booty!!! Only problem is that the dress is $700.

The way I see it is that it''s her wedding. This isn''t her first marriage but the first one took place in a courthouse and she was wearing jeans with a tee-shirt. She always regretted not doing a wedding. Now she''s having the wedding of her dreams but still on a budget. I think she should splurge and go for the dress but wanted to see what you guys thought. She''s on the fence.

Again, here''s the photo and it does no justice. I have photos of her in it but I have to ask her permission first.

How bad is it going to blow her budget? Also, has she accounted for alterations? What things does she have left to buy and do for the wedding?

She has a budget of $15,000 but is trying to keep everything within $10,000. She''s having about 50 people and it will be in Key West. The ceremony will be about $1,000. The reception about $6,000. That doesn''t include photography, DJ (I don''t think she needs one but that''s just me), and flowers (she has a bridal party of 5). She will spend a week in the Keys as her honeymoon so she will need hotel but not airfare.

We''re not sure if she will need alterations yet. The dress she tried on was the only one they had available at the time and it was 1 size too small. Even then there was only about 2 inches that she couldn''t zip up so with 8 to 10lbs loss, it''ll fit her perfectly. She wants to hem the train because she feels its too long (they''re getting married on the beach).

She has everything left to do for the wedding LOL

I like the dress she already has much better, especially for the price. But I''d have to see her in the dresses to give an opinion on what she should do.

Hmm okay I am voting no.

I think it''s beautiful..but I like the one she has more. I just can''t mentally justify the extra expense when it is unnecessary and this size didn''t even fit. We don''t want her to buy a dress planning to lose weight..that''s bad bad pressure.

So I vote stay with the prettier and less expensive dress!

If while wearing the she already has, she is an 8, but in the new dress she''s an 11, well, I''d want to look like an 11 on my wedding day.

There is a big difference between ''this fits me'' and ''this makes me look like a million bucks''.

If the dress was 1k and her budget was smaller, I''d say no contest, stick with the $80 dress. But if the new dress does wonders for her figure (and I''m talkin'' jaw-dropping "Damn!"), well ... maybe she could consider it.

But it would have to be a significant difference in hotness scale from the $80 dress. I say this as a tight-fisted penny-pinching coupon-carrying fan of frugality.

I'd like to see pictures first too, but I LOOOOOVE the new dress. I think it looks really cool and unique. Its got a "rocker" feel kind of. Who is the designer?

The $80 dress is nice, but seems ordinary to me compared to the new dress. Of course, it all depends on what she looks like in them.

If it isn't going to break the bank, she should get the dress she really loves.

ETA: Nevermind the q about designer...I see its a David's Dress! I totally forgot that part of the post after I saw the picture

I agree! It depends on how much she goes up on the hotness scale.

Also, if she''s comfortable with it, have her search ebay, craigslist, and all the dress sites. She might just find the dress at a price she feels more comfortable spending.

Miranda--That''s what she was thinking as well. I know that DB does alterations but not sure if it has to be a DB dress.

The dress your friend already has is lovely and sweet without being the least bit cloying.

The new dress has an edginess and overt sexiness, and as msjo said, it has a rocker feel to it.

I much prefer the dress she already has.

I can imagine that the second dress gives her hips. With a wide band going across the hips, it''s likely to make anyone look hippy (and that might not be a good thing, ya know?).

I voted No, but that is becuase I don't see that there is enough of a difference to justify spending $600 more. I'm frugal.

ETA: ITA, chop her head off and send them over. We need to see her in each dress.

How long before her wedding? Doesn''t everything at Davids get drastically reduced 2xs a year? Or is that just their advertising?

I also like the idea of altering what she has if she wants that more modern vibe. In no way do you need to go to a "David''s" alteration person to get that look. You need the picture and to find a great alterations place.

Remind her of the cardinal rule. Once you buy a wedding dress, you are done shopping/trying on/perusing websites for other wedding dresses. Was she trying to steal the attention while you were shopping for your dress when this number was found?

Then tell her that some garbage bags would look even better. She is an awesome friend to you...only sorta kidding.

Ditto. But I''m one of those girls who will like a dress more specifically b/c I got such a great deal on it.

That depends on her. If this dress blows the other one out the water, and it fits in her budget, she should go for it. But if she loves the dresses almost equally, save the $$ for the honeymoon. After all, you will only wear the dress once......


EDIT*** I just saw the pic of the dress she already has and I like it better than the new one, but its not up to me. She has to decide which she loves more.

i voted no, but mostly because the lines of it just really aren''t as elegant as the one she already has. moreover, the jeweled belt embellishment is borderline tacky... if she would have the option of the dress sans jeweled-belt, i''d say go for it. $700 is still reasonable for a wedding dress, but the dress she has is beautiful and so much classier.
