Why do women eat salads on dates? A new study suggests it’s all for show.

Researchers at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, observed 469 individuals in 266 groups at three cafeterias on campus. Sitting at a distance of at least 10 meters (damn Canadians and their metric system), the researchers watched these people in a natural setting and recorded how many people were sitting at each table, of what gender the people were, and estimated the caloric content of what each one was eating.

The findings were pretty clear:

1) Females chose foods with significantly fewer calories when eating with men rather than women. (Note to Jezebel: word “female” is in the study!)

2) Women’s food choices weren’t affected just by a man being present, but in proportion to how many men were present — more men equaled fewer calories. (More women being present had the opposite effect on women’s calorie consumption.)

3) Neither the size of the group nor the gender make-up seemed much to affect males’ food choices.

not my wife...she eats like a pig in front of me.

This place is like 99% women.

Is there any truth to what this study indicates?

Can we add gay men to this too Kenny???

Just want it to be equal.

Hey, I didn't conduct the study.
I just wondered if women would agree or disagree with the study results.

But sure, if a study says that gay men eat less around straight men that's what the study says.
BTW gay men are more likely to be in the anorexia/bulimia group, which is sometimes thought of as something that affects women.

Actually, whether or not I am in a group is immaterial.
You didn't have to be black to oppose slavery.

I can''t find the exact quote but Carl Jung said something like, Just because we are equal does not mean we are the same.

Yeah we will never be the same Kenny. I get that, but really have to ask, why do these threads?? They are mostly to women, and women will say.... Heck no, I will order what I want, or if a salad does it for me fine...

My thing is that it doesn't have to be asked just of women..... I hope I didn't offend you Kenny.

I pray she never reads PS!!!!

I probably SHOULD do that more...

I do think that it''s generally true b/c I noticed that with my friends. When we go on double dates or out in a group, they eat less than they usually do when it''s just the two of us. I don''t think I do it myself b/c I had never ordered a salad on a date. I usually get steaks. DH said that I am the first girl he dated who ordered a steak, the other girls got salad or chicken. I thought that was interesting.

Edit.

Hmm...for me, I''m more likely to scale back what I eat if I''m with a group of particularly fit, light-eating females than I am if I''m with a group of guys, but maybe that''s because I''ve always had predominantly male friends, have brothers, etc. For me, I actually tend to eat more if I''m hangin'' out with the boys. I''ve also noticed that my choice of beverage is different depending on my company--I usually prefer a cocktail, but I''ll drink a pint of beer if I''m with all guys just so I''m not the only one being a priss, haha!

ROFLMAO!!!! SALAD?! Um, I''m guessing you''d struggle to replicate the result of that study in Scotland. How truly bizarre.

I usually order a rack of ribs

I almost never get salad at a restaurant. I don''t eat cucumbers, raw tomatoes, onion or peppers, olives, weird cheeses, and most of the other stuff they put in salads to make them interesting. I also don''t eat salad dressing. I can pretty much only order a dry chicken caesar salad (cheese, lettuce, chicken), which is a wate of money IMO 95% of the time, unless that is just what I am craving.

long answer to say ''No''... but that is at legit restarants. I eat real food if I go out. I can eat cheap boring salads at home.

The exception being fast food: if I eat at Chipotle, I like their salad (basically a burrito without the tortilla) but only get it 40% of the time and tacos the other times, or at Panera, where I get an asian salad and sandwhich or soup.
18.gif
I also used to enjoy Wendy''s southwest salad, but they don''t sell it anymore

Sometimes I will grab a grocery store salad bar on the run, too. As I get older, I appreciate that crappy food makes me sluggish but salads and fruit are light and don''t slow me down. i''m more likey to grab a slice of pizza, though. It''s cheaper and I

cheese!

I can see the truth in this, at least on a subconscious level. It makes sense that you eat a little more when you are around people you''re comfortable with. I think I tend to eat a little more when I go out with the girls than I do say at one of my husband''s work functions. But I don''t think I change what I want necessarily...salad is one of my favorite meals, but so is steak, so it just depends on what kind of mood I''m in.

I eat salad because I like salad. I eat it alone, with other people, with my cats. I'll eat it for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. I don't eat it because I am making a show. Like trillionaire I don't eat it at restaurants. Why would I go out to eat something I can make on my own? That's my rule of thumb for ordering. If I can make it on my own, why would I get it out?

Let''s look at who they were studying here: female college students (ages likely 18-22)

I don''t think its unrealistic that a young woman would choose to eat a salad over say, a big pile of fries or a super greasy burger, when a bunch of guys are around that she doesn''t know. I think people this age are still determining their own identity, and honestly a lot of that can be shaped by how you THINK others perceive you at this point.

Also, it didn''t say just that they served salads over burgers, but that the meals had many less calories. We should remember that this is a cafeteria setting, where it is much easier to regulate the # of calories than in a regular restaurant (don''t get that side of fries, take a smaller helping, etc) because there are often way more choices.

So, in the end, I believe the study, particularly for this age group. As to whether or not you can apply it to 25, 30, 50 year old women - that''s another story.

And let''s not forget that a salad with ample full-fat dressing (and cheese, meat, croutons, etc) often has far more calories than a simple, plain burger.

I just order the most expensive thing on the menu

Haha, I think I eat more when guys are around. Guys eat more, so I end up eating more.

My very first date with FI I ate 3 slices of pizza, had a beer, and then some icecream later when we took a walk on the beach.

This thread is so annoying.

So far, it has made me crave steak, pizza, cheese, chicken and now icecream. Oh, and a salad, oddly enough.
9.gif

my first date with SO I had a shrimp platter... popcorn... coconut... and scampi ... and I ate the rolls
27.gif

usually the hubby gets the salad (which at places like olive garden can end up having more calories than other foods because of all the crap they throw in them! lol) and i usually get the worst sounding thing on the menu (i.e. double chocolate lasagna stuffed ice cream fudge cake) lol

I don''t think it''s ever occurred to me to monitor my eating in the company of men. Around women, if we''re playing that "Oh, I am SO FAT, I ate an ENTIRE BAG OF CHIPS, I have to be GOOD now" game, maybe (and even then, probably not ... only if I can sense serious food issues that I don''t want to trigger), but dudes don''t care ... and, more importantly, neither do I. Generally speaking, the only opinion that matters to me is my own.

Not for me. Personally, whether it was a date or business travel, I used to starve all day so I could eat the high calorie dinner at night. Salads, I love. Back when fast food restaurants had salad bars, I was in 7th Heaven. Big salads without all the high caloric gunk are my favorite lunch. Now, you almost have to make an appointment to get a decent non-gunked salad from a restaurant around here, lol.

Can we add gay men to this too Kenny??? Just want it to be equal.
LMAO!

IN general sure its true. I know lots of women that have done that (why is a good question) personally for me, no. I like salad but not restaurant salad. Besides for me, going to eat at a restaurant is a treat and I treat it as such.

My hubs was very glad I ate like a normal person when he met me lol
