wife said...the state will cut her salary by about 5%

Well, teachers here haven't had raises in 3 years, so I think many states' budgets are hurting. Maybe time to trim some unnecessary things rather than cut wages, though.

yes i'd agree teachers are under paid, and yes we need to cut the unnecessary things including wages for state workers to bring down our state deficit.

Yes, unnecessary things like garbage collection. Or better yet, privatize it so that you can all pay more for a private contractor to do the same (or lower quality) work. And see what a private contractor will charge to come out and fix a broken water main on a weekend. Can tax money be spent more wisely? Sure. But austerity measures and private contracting cause more problems than they solve.

Our garbage, recycling, etc., is all run by a private company. What is the normal cost of picking up garbage? Our bill is about $30 a month for a small garbage can, recycling (bi-weekly pick-up), and a yard waste bin.

Okay, that sounds about the same as ours here. We have a seperate co. for water and pay bi-monthly, which comes out to $70-75 a month (rates go up in summer) and then there is the garbage bill, which is every two or three months. (Water is through the city and garbage is through private company that services only certain parts of the region.)

hi,

I pay $58.00 for 3 months of once a week garbage pick up. It has been that way for 32 yrs. Private collection has been exellent.
Now, the village wants to negotiate the electic for us. I hope that works out. Private here has been good and not too expensive.
