I have a great girlfriend who has started dropping hints about a ring.

Our history We were together 3 years, broke up 3 years (my fault), and we have been back together for 4 years. We have something special, and she has a real big heart, so I feel that it is probably high time that I accommodate her wishes for a ring.

Having put it off for so long, I want the ring to be special. I thought about looking around at local jewelers, but had a jeweler suggest that I could buy a diamond and then a setting and have a jeweler mount it.

My gf is very artsy so she will appreciate that I participated in the creation process to make her a unique ring.

What I have in mind:
1ct, G-H, SVV1-SVV2, Princess cut.

I would like a solitaire setting in white gold, but have not decided exactly which setting just yet.

I have found a jeweler that says they will set the diamond in the setting for $70.

Now, is the matter of finding the best diamond for my money a band that will compliment the diamond. I am open to ideas and suggestions. I have a really good idea about how much the diamond is going to cost, but the prices really vary on the settings.

I was kind of favoring a tension setting but the local jeweler said that if you bend the ring, you can lose the diamond. That is a huge deterrent for a tension setting.

I kind of like the look of this ring: http://www.icestore.com/gallery/diamond_gallery_detail.asp?ID=65

I believe that the local jeweler has a setting similar to this one.

I really don't want to make a hasty decision because I want this ring to be special.

How does one get a woman's ring size without asking her what size ring she wears????

I am very happy for you. Do not have any ideas about the ring - I am not into diamonds, other PS-ers should definitely help you. Re. the size - you may get into any inexpensive jewelry store (or even a jewelry counter at JCPenney) and check out several rings in different sizes. Just ask the saleslady to show you rings in size 6, or 7 or...whatever. And then bring her in to look at whatever...draperies. And stop by the counter and point to a ring and say that it looks good on her...You got an idea.

Even easier - does she wear any ring? Or is there any ring that she is not wearing at the moment? Overstock.com has a jewelry department. In Help section there is "sizing a ring" subsection. With a measuring device - it is sort of a paper tape, just print it, cut out and you have the tape. Wrap it around her ring (does she take off her rings at night? Or keeps them in a jewelry box?). You''ll get her approximate size. The take her to JC Penney to verify.

Re. the ring itself - could it be more useful to move this posting to diamond forum? Very few people can see it here, and it calls for specific answers.

She doesn''t wear rings, therefore there are none laying around or in jewelry boxes that I can take for reference. Also, if I show her a ring at a store, and get her to try a ring on, she will know that something is up.

It will definitely have to be something more subtle. I know it is a tricky task.

Do you have a female relative you can bum a couple different sized rings from? Or some decent fakes in a couple of sizes? Make up some story about female relative getting some rings sized/repaired and asking you to pick them up. Be caught playing with them and remark ''here, try these on, lets see how they look?'' Bonus points if you can score a ring similar to the one you want to make and see if you can get her reaction to the style before you spend the money to have it made.

I ended up pulling out some of my mom''s old jewelry and had her try it on. My mom passed away in 02 and I still have her old jewelry in a jewelry box. I got her size. Thanks though.
