Why I love Detroit

It''s nice to see a POSITIVE story about Detroit for once. We get such bad press, but the city is not so bad as everyone makes it out to be.

Thanks elledizzy, I needed that. I still remember the city the way it was when I was a kid in the 50s and 60s and I still love it. What part of the city are you from?
I grew up on the east side-van dyke 7 mile area.

I don''t live in the city, but spend a lot of time there, and see it for more than what people make it out to be. Lots of great things to do downtown!

As a child, I grew up right on the Southfield/Detroit border.

Michigan in general has gotten a lot of bad press lately, specifically Detroit!

Thanks for posting Elle!

I worked in Detroit when DH and I were first married...we lived in Dearborn at that time and the city had undergone a lot of new building near the river front...I worked in a gorgeous new office building, it was a great experience!

We live ''in the country'' now, but I''ve been down there for the Stanley Cup Red Wings parades over the years too and have always enjoyed it. Hopefully with the new mayor in office, Detroit will have good leadership for a change! I think the corrupt leadership really sunk the city faster than anything....maybe some good things will start happening again! Especially if the Wings bring Stanley back again this year!

The Red Wings will do it!

Maybe we''ll have a repeat of... oh gosh, 7 years ago? Red Wings SHUT OUT the Avalanche in a 7-0 score for a game 7?

I''m hoping for a repeat of that!

OK, I have a question: My grandmother is originally from Detroit and she pronounces it "DEE-troyt." I''ve always heard people say "de-TROYT." (Of course, I was born and raised in MD, so maybe I''m just clueless?) So do all Detroitians say "DEE-troyt" or is my Mee-Maw just weird?

Ditto...

I do hearDEE-troyt... like as in "DEEEETROIT... BASKETBALL" which is often chanted at pistons games.

I''m not from the city specifically. I just say de-TROYT.

Yeah, I''ve always said "de-TROYT" too. I guess Mee-Maw is just a little weird . . . but that''s OK, we love her anyway! LOL!

I lived in a place called Novi for eighteen months during the early 1990''s and loved it. I thought Detroit was a great city too. The people were al so lovely, welcoming and warm. I did some studying at Oakland Commumity College and had a lovely time there too. I fell in love with the States and the American people during that time

i was in novi for part of the early 90s too samantha red!

Detroit does tend to get a bad rap often enough, but I''m with you! I have been there a few times, since it''s only about a 6 hour drive, and I enjoyed each time I was there! Thanks for posting that!

Woo Hoo Red Wings! Especially Abdelkader and his beautiful goal.

Just happened to lurk here and see this...

Thanks for posting, Elle!

I do live in Detroit (and pronounce it de-TROYT) just east of downtown in historic Lafayette Park and am moving downtown to Woodward Ave. next month. I also work in Detroit and absolutely LOVE it. My FI lives with me, and he attends school and works here in the city as well.

There is SO much going on here. I''m watching the Wings right now and headed to the Tigers game tomorrow night. There is an opera, one of the biggest farmer''s markets in North America, a world-class art museum, incredible art deco buildings downtown, an amazing riverfront, I could go on and on and on...and I do! To anyone who will listen.

The best part is, the whole city feels like a really good secret. There are never major lines or waits at great restaurants, and it''s sooo cheap!

After a lovely happy hour at a favorite downtown bar (Jacoby''s) with my FI last Friday, he said on the way home: "I love this town. Let''s stay here as long as we possibly can." We plan to!

Again, Elle, thanks. Detroit is VERY near and dear to my heart, so I love positive news on it.

This was refreshing! Finally nice to see something good said about Detroit! I am a little further north (Rochester) but we all know when someone asks where we''re from.. the answer is "Detroit!"
