Maybe because politics (power) returns us to the role of children.

Exactly, because politics is power, and it relates to primal needs and emotions.

well... the healthcare thread has gone off topic, but I reckon I''d be summarily banned if I said what I actually think of the bill itself.

I couldn''t see that coming!

LOL!

The world of children is filled with absolutes - black and white, right and wrong, good and evil.

The world of adults is filled with grey areas, difficult choices, and (at times) no-win situations no matter what happens. In the world of adults some times it''s necessary to agree to disagree, or do the best you can with the information you have.

Politics is all about opinion and forces people into making absolute choices - this absolute mindset brings us back into a childhood mentality.

Unfortunately governments must act decisively for the public good. Cohesive national policy is geared towards absolutes because so many people are involved in carrying out the work of government. If governement mandate was left too open to interpretation different civil servants would carry out public service differently leading to patchy and inconsistant application and delivery of government goods and services.

It seems dumb, but "Because I said so" gets things done when working with/for large groups of people.

It''s hard to have a civil political discussion with more than two people, because for every three people there are 4 opinions.
