Who is watching the new television series Who do you think you are?Being an avid genealogy and history buff I look forward to every episode. The first episode with Sarah Jessica Parker''s ancestor being involved in the Salem witch trials was so interesting, and Lisa Kudrow''s story about her great grandmother and the extermination of the Russian Jews was so sad!

According to the Henry family geneology done by a distant relative of my paternal grandmother, we are quite possibly descended from the same gene pool as Patrick Henry ("Give me liberty, or give me death!"). The family has been traced back to pre-Revolutionary times, and comes from the same area as the famous patriot.

That's the upper crust, DAR side of the family. . .

And then there's my maternal grandpa, who had to cut and run from Kentucky, because he was being chased by the law for 'moonshine distribution'.

So, family background can be quite interesting.

I'll have to watch the show.

Oh I am. I''ve been into genealogy for at least 10 years now. It''s amazing what you can find out about your past. I''ve loved the show so far and have to admit that each story has moved me to tears.

We have a UK version and its very interesting. There was one woman who thought she was related to royalty in the middle ages, only to find out one of her ancestors was responsible for bringing slaves to the US. She was so upset.

I''ve always been interested in this, but whenever I try to search for information online all I find are a lot of websites trying to sell me their products.

Where does one start to search for family history?

Thanks, Maisie! I''m building my family tree right now.
This is very exciting!!!!

good show just watched all 3 episodes today.

The telivision show is sponsered by Ansetory.com,but I believe there is a charge to use them. One of the largest sources of information for family history is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints genealogical library in Salt Lake City,Utah. There is no charge for information and is used by professional genealogists and people from all backrounds and levels of interest.

I watched the Emmit Smith episode. Very cool. RootsWeb.com is a good site as it has the Worldconnect project. I did find the direct LDS site to have a lot of errors in their information. The previous 2 sites have people who have done their own research and posted it online. Also the Federal Census is FULL of information. I personally have my mothers side to 1300''s and am closely related to Field General Erwin Rommel, the Desert Fox. My husband I traced to 1387. His GGGGrandfather was with Washington crossing the Delaware. I have his revolutionary War pension records from the National Archives. I found lots of good information, and lots of stuff my older family wanted to keep as skeletons in the closet. It took a good 3 years to research so don''t give up hope! It will be fun and rewarding!

I watched the show for the first time last night and really enjoyed it. I have always been interested in genealogy and this might help to move me to action.

The relative who did our book of family history started with
interviewing living family members and then checking their stories for facts. This led him to Church records (Births deaths marriages etc) and gave him a good running start. As he went back to earlier generations the Census was a big help also.He spent 20 years researching but you can find out quite a bit if you just know the name of a relative who emigrated through Ellis Island. I found my great grandfather''s name on the passanger list and a picture of the ship. It didn''t cost anything.
