A friend can get us Whirlpool appliances at a great price (about 50% off retail). I am in the market for a new electric dryer and decided that I would also get a new washer (dryer is 15+ years).

I was considering the Whirpool Cabrio WTW7300XW washer and the matching dryer WED7300XW. Anyone have these? Any feedback?

Soocool, I am not sure about those models but when I was doing my own research, whirlpool didn't fare very well in Consumer
Reports or in the consumer reviews. However, I have a friend who owns an older model and she loves it.

I ended up getting Samsung front loaders at Lowe's and have not had a single bit of trouble with them in the year that we
have owned them. They get used continually with 4 kids at home and one who brings all his laundry home from college.

I have a whirlpool dryer that I dont love but Ive had no problem with it. But Im in a NYC apartment so having my own laundry is quite a luxury in the first place. The only reason I got that one is because I could offer it only 120v standard household, not the 240 that most run on. But I got an LG frontloader washer and totally love it. A lot of people complain that fron loaders never empty out the rinse water and in time they mildew. This can be prevented and or cured by adding a teaspoon of TSP (tri sodium phosphate) AND a teaspoon of bleach (dilute it) to a washload twice a month. Neither one alone will suffice. TSP is sold at hardware stores as a cleaner for cement like driveways and patio things. It used to be in laundry soaps but was banned in the 70s. Water pollution. So dont use much, dont use it too often and dont tell your friends. Unless they smell of mildew.

Thanks for the tip, Vapid!

I also read Consumer Reports and every review I could find before investing in a new set last year. My friend has that Cabrio set and hates it. She said it almost puts her clothes in knots with it's fierce spin cycle!!! I also went with Samsung because it generally got the best reviews. I didn't go with the most expensive models. I do have to do things to keep that mildew smell away. That is a HUGE negative to all front loaders, which I find to be ridiculous that they make something that does that. But another tip is to never close your washer door after a load. Dry the bottom of the seal after a load and leave the door open.

I haven't had any problem at all with a mildew smell and haven't added anything to the washer. I do leave the door open most of
the time. I bought the top of the line machines but within a month they came out with a new model. There wasn't much difference
in features at all. I don't know if all models have one, but my Samsung has a drain on the front that needs to be drained once
a month. I wonder if that makes a difference?

luv2, my lg has one of those once a month drains too, with a strainer chamber in it to catch change, never seems to catch me any 3 carat asschers! I've never closed the door of the machine (except when its running, and the gasket wiping, nothing works except this tsp bleach combo. And if the mildew gets into your clothes it is the only thing that will remove it that I know of. I joined epinions because of this issue and read a lot about people being rightly furious. It wouldnt be so bad if they told you up front and gave you the information to manage it, but they say nothing and the machines are very expensive, Now that I've found a way to remedy the problem Im very happy with the front loader. IT is quiet and uses less water while getting clothes cleaner.

My Kennmore front loader smells a bit funky after a while too. They also make a specific washer cleaner that you can put through on a quick cycle too. I've also heard of using lemon kool aid? I've never tried it though. That's the only thing I've had a problem with, though I can't even really say it's a problem if you take a minute here and there to take care of it.

DH and I went to Lowe's today to look at the washer and dryer (the Whirlpool is a top load) and met another woman there who was also looking at the same machines. (She said she had a Bosch that died after 3 years). She has 2 friends who have the whirlpool and love it. She did mention the super spin cycle. But the machine has 3 speeds for the spin cycle so as long as I don't put it on the super fast speed I think it will be ok. The msrp on the washer is $899, Lowe's has it for $799 and Sears has it for $669 , and I can get it for $475.

I also liked the dryer and was trying to see if there is any benefit to getting a steam dryer as opposed to a regular electric dryer.(I can get the dryer also for $475 and the steam dryer for $30 more.- Lowe's price $799 and Sears $669- I don't remember what the msrp was)

The woman I saw at Lowe's had the issue of Consumer's Report and it rated the Whirpool top load very well. The front loads not so well.

Our GE Harmony HE washing machine which we got in 2005 died today after already having several problems a service provider said would not be worth fixing. Disappointing given that the expected lifespan of a washing machine is 11-14 years.

After checking Consumer Reports (picture attached) we ordered the Whirlpool Cabrio WTW5700X. I'll have to see if it has the super spin previously mentioned in this thread and consider myself forewarned.

Thanks for attaching the CR page. Thsi was the same report the woman at Lowe's had with her.

After going back and forth, I think I decided to go with the 5600 (Cabrio). It still has a 4.3 cu ft capacity and all the things I really need in a washer. It doesn't have the super rinse that goes at 1100 rpm. The 5600 spin cycle speed is only 800 rpm. The upper models (7300) had features that I truly did not need. My friend will be ordering it for me this week and it wil cost about $350. and about the same for the comparable dryer. All in all I will be saving over $400 for both including sales tax. My neighbor offered to buy my old machine for $75.00 and I am selling the dryer for scrap metal.

Great job, soocool! :appl: How much will you get for the scrap metal?
