Interesting, everyone''s picking the solitaire! I would probably choose the smaller stone with halo.

What if the stipulation was that this has to be the only diamond you get for the rest of your life, and you can not change the setting ever?
I''d take the larger rock without question and I''d reset it down the road when I put aside the funds to do it.

OK, maybe it will be the last large diamond you ever get to buy, but who''s going to make sure you never change the setting - ever? The settings and mountings police? LOL?

I am a setting's girl so I would go with the smaller diamond assuming the setting is something I love. For me it is about the total package.

ETA: I am also assuming that when you asked the question you meant nothing could ever change (ie resetting it or upgrading the diamond). Otherwise the question wouldn't be that interesting

Solitaire I have one now and love it

If someone offered you two choices for an engagement ring:

a smaller diamond set in a beautiful blingy halo setting (say 1 carat) or

a bigger diamond set in a plain solitaire setting (say 1.4 carats),

which would you choose and why?

Assume the color, cut, and clarity are the exact same for both.
That''s exactly what I chose!

(for my upgrade)

Because my tastes are simple. I love blingy, on other people, not so much on me. I guess my personal taste is "understated".

I don''t really like halos, so it''s a slam-dunk choice of the solitaire for me.

Larger stone, and maybe upgrade the setting later (to anything, halo-three stone-ect!)

I would get the plain solitare because a well-cut stone doesn''t really need a halo.

Solitaire! I like halos, but more for RHRs than e-rings (at least for me). It''s just really hard to go wrong with a solitaire, you know?

+1.

admittedly, i''m not into halos and i find them trendy whereas to me the solitare is timeless.

DEFINITELY the solitaire, especially if I can never change the setting.

I love halos, and almost got one for my own engagement ring, but in the end I knew that it would probably look dated after some years. I prefer a more timeless look, definitely.

Definitely the solitaire.

Hmmm.... that's hard, because I'm not into halos (for myself).

But for the sake of hypothetical reality, I would choose the halo. I'm all about the setting, always, and I'm more attached to my setting than my stone. So I'd rather have the exact setting I want from the start.

Only in hypothetical-world. If it were real-world my setting choice would be a non-solitaire non-halo antiquey style and smaller stone - hey, that's what I did pick!!

the solitaire, but mainly b/c I''m meh about Halos. Soltaire cushion would suit me just fine thanks

Yes, me too! That''s how I feel about it.

Solitaires are timeless and lovely, but I would probably get bored after a while.

Ha! This is exactly the dilemma I faced before we got engaged. I went with the halo, because I was so in love with the setting and found a stunner of a stone at all of .48 carats.

I think I even started a very similar thread in LIW back in the day, everyone told me to go with the setting I loved (I think...or I didn't listen

).

I've never regretted it.

ETA: I also don't plan on upgrading or changing the setting.

I''d take the solitaire even if it were the last diamond I''d have, and no change of setting. I''m just not a halo lover.

I''m a total package kinda gal too! I go for the halo! I honestly think that there will always be some sort of halo look out there and I don''t know why but to me it adds a bit of romance to the overall look of the diamond. Vintage styles somehow reminds me about simpler times back in the days.

The solitare!!

Larger solitaire. You can also always upgrade the setting later. Plus I like but am not addicted to halos. Besides, what if I decide what I really want are some colored sidestones?

Edited: I'd still take the solitaire. That's what I have now. But it'd be a custom solitaire with great metalwork :)

Solitaire. Definitely.

Count me in for the solitaire. I''d get around to blinging it out later.

Solitaire.

I find solitaires boring (just MHO), and I really like detailed settings, so I would go with the halo.

I''m a bit torn...

BUT- because my e-ring (which i love, love, love and adore) is a 1ct halo, my vote is for the halo! I like detail and intricacy in settings, as well as an antique-y feel.

Then again, solitaires are timeless and classic... and I''d love a 1.4ct

Can I have both???

Solitaire - diamonds have a beauty all their own.

And for the love of detailed metal-work, there are many pieces out there that one could buy for a RHR, pendant, etc. that will cost less than that +.4 of diamond ....

Solitaire! I like the emphasis on the stone and not the setting...

Solitaire for me as well. I''m not into too much bling and prefer something simple.

Halo!!!
