The Whole Foods thread made me wonder. Where do you grocery shop? Just curious...

I buy bulk items from Costco and bulk stuff like organic sausages and chicken there too. We go through a lot very quickly so it makes sense. Daily items, fruits and veggies I buy from our local small chain (3-4 total stores) or local green grocer in the town I live in. Often they have the freshest produce at the best prices. Costco produce is too hit and miss for me. I seldom go to WF cause I find them too expensive for the quality I get compared to the little neighborhood grocer near my house.

We are same as you LLJsmom as we use Costco for many things. I agree on the produce because it seems it spoils so fast compared to the same thing at Winco. We recently had a Winco built and I use it often for things we do not buy at Costco. I like the bulk items and they have a good selection of organic. We also have a Natural Grocers recently opened and I can get a good variety of items not found elsewhere. I hate grocery shopping with a passion and want to get in and get out as fast as I can.

I would rather slam my left tit in the car door than go grocery shopping. Costco can be the exception for me, but I will typically only go mid-day during the week, and I really buy much more stuff like clothes (love the center area!) and small appliances (toaster anyone?), etc., than food. That's the CB's department! If he doesn't bring it home we don't eat it...

 I call Costco the $200 Dollar Store.

I WISH I could get in and out for two hundred bucks! The CB conned me into going there on Sunday on our way home from the beach house -- it was either that or we were going to be wiping our butts with pages torn from magazines... not to mention we were were of paper towels, laundry detergent, and something else I can't remember right now... I walked out for $393. Now to be fair, I did get a bunch of skorts, he picked up a few polo shirts, and there were some other center area things involved, but Four Hundred Dollars... :nono:

I shop at the closest grocery store which right now for me is big Y - with the exception of meats which I have delivered from a local farms meat share. I can not wait to move in July so I can shop at Market Basket again! I get a lot of veggies during summer months from local stands and my friend's gardens.

LOL. Dee I only call it that because I cannot get out of there for less than that. It is not a store to enter to buy only one item as it would be cheaper for me to buy napkins or toilet paper at the gas station than set foot in Costco.

We do have the Executive membership so look at all the money we save with that!!!

LOL I'm with you Dee. My BIL says we are going broke saving money at Costco.
We spend anywhere from $150-400 there a week. For 2. IDK what we are buying LOL.

We shop at Costco for most of our groceries once a week. Lots of organic produce and food.
For the items we cannot get there we go to Whole Foods, Trader Joes and our local health food store and supermarket. And our farmer's markets. We enjoy buying produce there as well.

Costco once a week is our constant though. Lots of times my dh goes without me for my sanity because in NY the Costco is usually always crazy busy. But at the beach Costco I enjoy shopping. Much less crowded and very pleasant.

Trader Joe's, BJs (like COSTCO), and Target. I rarely go to a normal grocery store at all!

Costco
Trader Joe's
Winco
A supermarket where I'm almost always the only white person.

My grocery go-to's are polar opposites: a discount chain called Grocery Outlet, and the local natural foods co-op. I get my paper goods (:wink2:) at Target.

As an aside, I'm finally starting to remember to pack a re-useable grocery bag in the car...

Redwood calling Costco the $200 store is spot on. We budget $200 a week for the four of us at Costco, doesn't matter that we buy different items each week either, we are always within $25 of $200.

I buy a few things I can't get at Costco at Stop and Shop. Even then, I have to go to specific stores to find the goat's milk for my son since he is lactose intolerant. Stop and Shop is expensive though unless there is a sale.

Costco shopping is also much easier if you go within half an hour of when they open. We also bring our own bags and bag everything at the food court.

70% Trader Joe's
20% Target
10% Whole Foods

I forgot to factor in Amazon, but that's where we normally order our toilet paper, paper towels, lysol wipes, etc. from. We actually order a lot from Amazon, but mostly gifts and big paper products. It replaced Costco because like a lot of you above, Costco was costing us a lot more than it was saving.

Online supermarket shopping- I spend about an hour a week making up the menu for the week then have it delivered on a Friday evening. It has transformed my life, no more waste, no more forgetting bits and pieces and I spend less overall!

I am going to have to check out Amazon for these paper products. Thanks!

Fruits and veggies, I go to a farm stand not far from me. Maybe half mile. I do go to the regular grocery stores if they're closed or out of certain things, but they're my first choice (very inexpensive and, very fresh...though you don't exactly get AC there...lol)

For paper goods, fizzy water, etc, I go to BJ.s. Of course I if I'm shopping for a party, its the place to go.

For meat, fish, and especially the dogs stuff, I go to the local butcher. Sometimes if too busy, its usually Aldi's. Aldi's here is super nice. I think some people think of it as the "poor people store" but you know what? The food is good here. They have fresh produce. Yes you do have to bag or box your own but hell you do that also at the places like costco and bj's too! And they do charge a small rental fee for a basket but that also means you don't see the damn things all over the parking lot! I also like that they are very selective and have a bang up organic section. And fresh boneless skinless chicken breast is 1.69lb. Score!

I hate going to Publix...very expensive. WinnDixie is less so, but will go there when needed. Both are stone throw away (within walking distance). I hate milk but NEED it in my coffee...lol I know I know but I love coffee more. I have to get 0 or 1% lactose free milk which of course makes it more expensive:roll:. At Publix a gallon is over 6 dollars. At WD, a bit over 5. thats crazy to me. I get the gallons because of him and the dog (they both likes milk with oatmeal and on top of icecream...yuck) I wish I didn't hate fake creamers in my coffee so much (and giving up coffee is not happening!)

I go to trader joes every blue moon or so. I don't have a real need for it. I thankfully don't go to whole foods anymore. Even though we have one thats 2 miles away, there's a hella lot of stores between here and there.

Sam's (Gas, Medicine, Nighttime Pullups for boys, Everything Dental Related, Dry and Paper goods, Cleaning Supplies)
Aldi's (Organic Produce and Meat)- DH shops here. I find it too confusing but I am always pleased with what he purchases.
Target (Clothes, Organic Fruit Snacks for the boys, Almond Milk, Organic Frozen Veggies, Vitamins)- I really take advantage of their Cartwheel App and usually save a ton!
Super Walmart (Cleaning Supplies and Organic Meat if Aldi's is out)
Publix (Fresh produce and anything BOGO- buy one get one)
There is no Costco nearby or else I would probably shop there also.

We literally order in or eat out every single night. Westside Market / Whole Foods / Greenmarket for dairy and fruit (depending on the season). I make our bread. Amazon for everything else.

Wegman's, Local Health food kind of place, in summer Farmer's Markets. Haven't ventured into Costco's yet. It's not on my beaten path, but also not far. I always want to, but I am afraid for all of the reasons the posters above cited . I have the same kind of problem in Target. I always end up with all sorts of "crap" I don't need. What is it about the places. Damn those endcaps!

Albertson's, Smith's, Trader Joes, sometimes Whole Foods.
I boycotted Walmart over 10 years ago.

You should probably stay away from Costco then! The temptation is even greater because not only do they have nearly everything you could want but they carry specialty items during certain holidays and seasons :lickout:

Although they don't carry a lot of different brands of an item, their quality I have found to be very good. We have only returned one item in several years and btw their return policy is basically no questions asked. Of course that will encourage people to take advantage (like the couple that returned a half eaten turkey after Thanksgiving, true story) but all and all its a great place to shop IF you can stick to a list

I do most of my regular grocery shopping at a Canadian chain, but Costco for big/specific things we like from there (lasagnas, sausages, chicken, pesto, TP/PT). I'm also signed up for a CSA during the summer and grow my own veggies :)

The only thing I miss about living in FL is Publix, dear sweet Publix, my one and only.

We now get groceries delivered from Amazon Fresh, which is surprisingly amazing. Prices are much lower than our local grocery stores, the produce is fantastic, and the selection is pretty large. Occasionally something will be out of stock or not available and we walk over to the local market. Well worth the $14.99 monthly membership because we save much more than that.

Costco for bulk items such as nuts, wine and other miscellaneous. I usually Costco shop one time per month. Farmers market on Saturday and for daily groceries, I shop at a local small chain grocery store. There's only two of us so it's easy to stock up.

HI:

Oh everywhere. In good weather, I walk to the Safeway for exercise for miscellaneous stuff. Otherwise it is Superstore. Their stuff is awesome and I like their philosophy, altho I hate the self packing thingie. I used to be faithful to Co-Op but their prices....eyiyiyi. Sunterra market has high quality pre-prepared stuff and utilize local farmers like Superstore. Call me loco, but I like that my jam has berries from farmers in Ontario or Quebec and/or Saskatchewan. Or closer. :)

cheers--Sharon

Oh Sharon, I miss Safeway!! We are stuck with expensive local stores here. Ours is Fortinos.

Whole Foods, our local grocery store, TJ's, and a little bit at Costco. I buy mostly organic, and am willing to pay more to do that. I also find Whole Foods isn't any more expensive than elsewhere if you're comparing organic to organic. They also have some products no one else has.

I have a love/hate relationship with Costco. It is like being stuck on the fwy during rush hour traffic. If you have ever been on CA fwys at rush hour.... It also irritates me that some stores have better stuff than others. Nevertheless, I shop there probably most.

1. Costco
2. Aldi's-great produce
3. Trader Joe's
4. Super Walmart-some stuff can only be found there. Plus it keeps me from having to go to the grocery.
5. Whole foods-once every couple months to stock up on their frozen steaks that are hormone and antibiotic free
6. Local grocery Von's/Staters only as a last resort.

Hannafords.
Trader Joe's.
Costco.
The Farm Stand in South Portland.
Holy Donut. :)
Scratch Bakery also in SoPo.
