*** OOPS - POSTED IN THE WRONG FORUM! I WILL ASK TO HAVE THIS MOVED TO HANGOUT ***

I am in love with the idea of an opium coffee table (so named, I've learned, because they were originally beds that people would smoke opium and lie on). My challenges are (a) quality (I'm not looking for anything super duper fabulous, but utter crap certaily doesn't thrill me... ) and (b) size. I can find some in the 36 X 36 range, and even one in 42 X 42, but I would like to go bigger than that. I would also consider rectangular, and a store near me has one that is 60 X 48, but it's $3,800... YOWCH. Also, looking for the dark finish (distressed is fine) and I would like it to be all wood (not a rattan or glass top). No problem with reproduction because the antiques are likely more than I really want to spend. So, if anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear about them.

I've seen a lovely one recently. I just can't remember where. I'll keep looking and post it if I find it.

Thank you Part Gypsy!

And Gypsy, I really like the ones at Ethan Allen. Even though I was looking for a darker finish, I might take a lighter one and go with what I think is a more sure quality bet. There is even an EA near me, so between when I quite work (next Monday!!!) and when I move, I may zip over and see if they happen to have one of these on display. Maybe they can even get it in different finishes.

Of course, I should be buying ANYTHING right now because who knows what sort of space I will end up in next. I'll be like one of my real estate clients who designed her entire living room around one orange velvet pillow she found at a flea market, except I'll buy a whole house to fit my giant opium table...

I just called my local EA and they have one of them on the floor. I'll be making an outing next week!

I wonder if World Market would have one? Do you live in the Pacific Northwest, if so, I know a couple of places.

Glitterpants -- It's funny you mention World Market because I actually have two small (18" square) opium end tables right now that I bought there about six years ago. Even then I wanted a huge one, but this is what they had, so this is what I got. Plus, to be honest, something that big wouldn't have fit in my current living room since it's only about 15' wide.

ETA: I'm in Chicago now, but moving to Kansas City. If the places you know of ship I would be happy to take a look at their sites!

I have an ethan allen coffee table myself. And there is a lot to be said about being able to see something before you buy it and see the quality. That said, I also own many furniture pieces from overstock (entertainment center, 4 poster bed, venetian mirrors, and rugs) and the ones with the 4-5 star reviews on there are usually great items. But you have to read the reviews. And the overstock reviews might look good, but when you read them, they aren't very good for this item. So I would go for the Ethan Allen too.

How funny. I am visiting my daughter in AZ and my laptop is sitting on the exact same coffee table. I bought it 20 yrs ago when I lived in Chicago. She has had it for the last 5 years. It needs to be refinished but is still as sturdy as the day it was bought. With 11 grandchildren, it has seen many years of hot wheels, blocks and assorted other toys played on it. It was a quality piece when I bought it and you get what you pay for...kind of like jewelry.

Love the one from Ethan Allen - love it in the square shape too - love their name for it more than opium table too - ha!

I keep coming back to that Dynasty table from Ethan Allen. Love the style of that table!

However, there are no end tables that I see to go with that table. Suggestions for end tables - I would need two or possibly three for lamps - I currently have a coffee table and three end tables in my living room.
