LiW when to open gifts?

i''ve gotten a few gifts (6 wks before the wedding). i thought etiquette said to open right away and send thank you note, but one of fi''s friends was a little disappointed that we''d opened his and said "aren''t you supposed to wait till after the wedding?"
i''m kinda confused...either way is fine with me, but what is most proper?

I am in a wedding in two weeks...and they are waiting to open the gifts until the day of the gift opening. Im not sure what the etiquette is....but it might be more exciting to wait and open everything all at once?!?! just a thought GOOD LUCK ON YOUR BIG DAY!!!!
