When did 'a thing' become "a thing"?

Recently I've notice frequent new use of the word, thing ... actually, "a thing".

Example: "I didn't know that was a thing."

Where did it come from?
Is it here to stay?

Do you use it?
Do you like it?

Now I have Snoop Dogg and Warren G (or is it Nate Dawg?) singing "Ain't nothin' but a g thang, baaabbyyy"... going through my head. Thanks! :wall:

I do miss the G Funk Era. The '90s were good times.

Kenny,

I think you need to give more guitar lessons, to hang out with younger people. I use my DD to try and stay contemporary; she gives me mix CD's as gifts, I listen to her Spotify play lists, and she fills me in on slang. We had an argument about the phrase "gang banger" (I was right, it's a gang member that shoots people) and I enjoy learning new things. I want to be part of the world, not just in it.

You don't want to end up like those old guys we knew (back in the 1970's) growing up; the ones stuck in WWII, who yelled at kids on the lawn, and had a living room full of 1950's kitsch.

So yeah, keep up. It's a thing. :sun:

;-)
