4) I don''t like to talk about this one but it was bravery beyond belief for the two guys in front of me. It was a raging house fire in the middle of the night. Reports of several people trapped inside and neighbors heard screaming. There was a crew shooting water through a back door. The stairs had collapsed and the crew said there was no way in. I grabbed a roof ladder and put it up to a 2nd floor sliding window. My senior officer and another FF went up the ladder and in through the burning kitchen. As I was getting ready to enter behind them, one of the two handed me one of the children. It was too late and that''s all I can handle talking about this one.

Your post made me swell with pride for my firefighter friends and cry at the same time for that poor family. Thank you for doing what do to help the community, treefrog.

Agreed. Treefrog, I know we say it a lot, but thank you for what you do. It can''t be easy dealing with situations like that, and it speaks volumes about your character that you can face such awful situations and still be as dedicated as you are.

Leaving a marriage I was unhappy with and being a single mum for years and years. During that time I finished one degree, bought a house, started a Masters and then met DH. For those who say kids of single mums don''t do well I have my son as proof that they do, he is now an engineer with a great job !

I was delivering mail to a home far in the woods, where the houses are maybe 4 to a mile. I saw two Rotties trying to tear apart a young cat. She was bleeding, and the owners were in the home, watching.

I was too mad to get a tire iron, so I jumped out of my jeep, with the customers'' mail, and beat both dogs about the head with the mail and my fists until the cat got away. The owners came out, upset I would hit their dogs and saying that both the dogs and the cat were their animals and they could do as they please.

I reminded them that animals, even in this remote area, were required to have collars, licenses, rabies shots and fences. I also reminded them that little kids lived in the area, and the last thing they needed was a lawsuit should one of their wandering dogs hurt the kids.

I then called animal control when my cell went back into range. Funny, I never saw those dogs again.

Bravo for you...and the cat! I''m glad you called animal control. I''m sure they got a little visit! I hope the cat was
cared for.

Many years ago my first husband was working in the garage with a table saw. I was gardening in the yard. I heard
a terrible scream, dropped everything and went running for the garage. Yes, my husband had got his fingers in the
table saw. His hand was bleeding profusely. I grabbed towels and gave them to him and headed for the phone.
911 got there really fast and started taking care of him. Meanwhile, our mail carrier was making the rounds and
saw what was going on. After the ambulance left she asked me if there was anything she could do. There was
nothing I could think of but I thought that was really nice of her to offer. She could have merrily went along on
her route but she stopped to see what she could do. Even though I didnt need her help I was thankful.

Anyway, my ex is missing half a finger and 2 of his fingers dont work very well because the tendons were cut
and wouldnt heal correctly. Its no big deal for him now but at the time it was really difficult to accept. I know
now that I am the type of person that takes care of things until someone else with more experience can take
over...and then fall a part later. It makes me feel better knowing this about myself.

Motto...never play with a table saw unless you really know what you are doing and take every precauction.

Probably one thing that comes to mind - made peace with it all and forgiven my father for a childhood and teenage years full of emotional, verbal and physical abuse.
Nobody more than I could be surprised at how different (almost close?!) our r'ship is these days...
Of course, it was necessary I do it for myself to move on, not for him

AJ, this really amazes me. It''s a VERY brave thing! My former stepfather treated me the same way your father treated you. My Mom divorced him shortly after I moved out of the house, and I have never forgiven him for the way he treated us. I don''t think I ever can, and I''m not even sure I want to. So I greatly admire you for being able to forgive your father! ((((HUGS))))

On a slightly related note, I think the bravest (and most worth-while!) thing I''ve ever done was leaving my abusive ex-husband and following through with the divorce. I was scared to death at the time, but I''m so glad I did it!

It''s made me a virtual orphan, but it was the right thing to do.

My kudos for having the strength to leave an abusive marriage. I can only imagine how challenging that could have been.
