What would you do? new project

I'd do it. Better to have one great piece....

Will you wear this new ring as an ering? Or a RHR?

You are right - pet rocks can wait..however, I have two waiting for me right now that I very badly want ;(

AJ, are the two you want coloured stones? Usually I'd be with Dreamer and say a bird in the hand, etc. However, the "perfect" coloured stone is hard to come by, so... just another thought to add to the confusion

Thanks everyone for your input !
I hope it doesn't seem odd to do so, but I posted pretty much the same query over in CS, and received almost the polar opposite in responses - I found this interesting, and helpful to have these different POV's and opinions.

I would much rather have a fabulous one of a kind piece than add to a collection of stones. I say go for it! I don't think that you will regret it. You will have accomplished something beautiful that you will enjoy for a lifetime :!:
Cheers RS for your post and encouragement. ::)

I'd set it, no question! And I CANNOT WAIT to see how you set it, either! :appl:

Thanks Thing! How are you? :wavey:
The setting is certainly pretty unique, imo. It will not be to everyone's tastes, but I am super excited about seeing the design come to life.
I have some gorgeous watercolour sketches from the vendor that I will be more than happy to share when the time comes.

Tough situation! AJ, do you have any projects you know you definitely want to do/have in the near future? If you have your heart on something else then you might need to figure out which takes a priority. But if your next 12-15 months have nothing in particular in store, then definitely go ahead and set that beauty in your custom setting.

Hey Kama,
apart from this ring, nope I would be cool not doing anything else for at least the first half of 2011..I mean, I will get that itch, but I could use my new ring to scratch it
I do have one project with JKT which has been in the works for about 8 months and has a balance owing..that should hopefully be done in the next month or so.
That said - I do have a number of coloured gems I want to purchase. One in particular I have wanted pretty much since I joined PS, and the opportunity has only come up to buy now..

So I can't afford both the gems and the ring at this stage...(if you're interested, I have a second thread over in CS to get the opinions of the coloured gem lovers on the topic - link)

Here I come, odd man out.

I would put it off until I could comfortably afford to do it. That's kinda' why I haven't had my loose round set yet. I really wanted to go custom, but then considered that it would put me into debt for a while AND I have three other projects that I've been dying to dive into.
So I waited.... and I think I may actually have found a setting that will make me happy for the long term and it's going to cost less than half of custom. I'm only speaking for myself and my pocketbook, but I can't do everything custom, and so I kept looking and looking for something I'd like that was very close to what I would have made custom. I'm saving my "custom bucks" for when I reset my actual wedding set.

But like I said, that's just me, my opinion for my situation and budget.

Hey GG, thanks lovey you know I value your opinion.
This project wouldn't put me into debt - it would potentially stop me from buying new luxury purchases like shoes etc for a little while, but I have way too many clothes as it is. ;)) It would also be a choice between the ring or some new gems..
I have allocated a budget for gems / jewellery this next 12mths and I strongly intend not to go past it. I didn't do this last year, so I've learned my lesson. ::)
Waiting is a good thing though - I know I would not find the setting design that this jeweller and I have worked on together elsewhere, but it will give me time to reflect on whether it is exactly what I want, and make sure I don't rush the custom process (which I'll admit to having done in the past).
I'm happy for you that you were able to find something at a better price without going custom - is this project currently in the works?

Thank you to:

for your kind comments on my OEC and votes toward setting - all duly noted! :D

I would set it and then spend the rest of the time bookmarking and saving pictures and drawing in my notebook of project ideas. I do think it seems like a long time, but it will go by faster than you think!

Hey Packy,
that is good advice about the notebook - oh lol, you have no idea though! I already have all my fave 'inspiration pics' of both gems and settings saved on my phone that I scroll though whilst I'm at work, in class...at the traffic lights..just kidding on that last one! But you get the picture - and that is nothing compared to whats on my laptop
And you're correct, the last 12mths certainly flew by.

I made the decision to go ahead and start a big project in January which meant no more new gems for quite some time. The project should be done in early October in time for my birthday. It's been hard not buying new gems and wanting to have other things set but I know it'll be worth it in the end. I say go for it! I promise, it won't be that bad to go without for a while.

BTW, your OEC is gorgeous! I can't wait to see what you do with it!

Hey again Burberry, and thankyou re my OEC; I certainly feel lucky to have found it. ::)
Do you mind if I ask about this project of yours, it sounds very intriguing! By all means, feel free to keep the details to yourself if you prefer, I understand.
I hope it is everything you are expecting and more - can't wait for the 'reveal', I really like your other pieces and your tastes.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.... one awesome ring completed is totally better than buying more gems in my book!

Cheers DD for your input - I would usually agree with you straight up, but coloured gems are a little different :(sad
If I were to pass, the opportunity could not present again for another 2yrs, or what have you..
It is a tough decision..hence why I'm asking all you guys

Hi AJ,

When I saw this post, I realized that I neglected to respond to your last post in your other thread about your OEC (sorry!) so I thought I'd drop in to give my two cents.

You've gotten a lot of good opinions already. If I were you, I guess my answer would depend on how often I'd wear the OEC ring and whether the gems are something unique and easy to source. If it's gonna be an ering, I'd go for the dream custom setting because it is something I'd wear every day. If it's gonna be a RHR, maybe I'd wait, especially if the gems are unique and available now. But if the gems are something on my wish list, well, I guess I'd flip a coin :cheeky:

BTW, did you get another opinion on your OEC? I thought was J instead of K. But either way, it's still

I think you should do it if you have already decided on a design that you love.
The gold price is only going up and not likely down in a year, so will platinum.

How about a solution to the other 2 projects? Are you able to work extra hours to make extra $?

If I told you you should wait until next year and spread your "one year budget" over 2 years so you can get a half year of extra bling over those 2 years would that make you happier than telling you you should just go for it now and let the rest wait?

Have you made a decision yet? I can't wait to see what you are going to do with that beautiful stone of yours!

(Ps yes I did get the iPhone4 . hehehehehehe. My signature line should be I shop therefore I am  )

Hey Susi - kinda, yes and no. I *think* I am going to get one or two of my gems first, put away half the budget for the ring than start saving toward it.
I like the signature

I think you should do it. Your stone is amazing and deserves an amazing setting and from what I saw in the thread you linked to, if it's anything like that one, that's what you'd end up with. I think you'll be more satisified with this in the long run. If you went less expensive and compromised on a setting, what are the chances you'll just end up resetting it into this setting down the road and will end up spending more money than you would just doing it the first time around?

Hi April - thanks for your comments. You're spot on in that a less expensive / compromised setting likely won't satisfy me, especially now I attached to the idea of this one!

The very thought of going a year without buying any colored stones sounds sooo bleak to me. However, if you look back to a year ago, haven't the last 12 months gone by fast? It IS only a year and a setting made by the people who made klewis' ring would, without a doubt, be worth it. His ring is a work of art! And you know, there will always be another colored stone. I would do it.

Thanks BN. Absolutely, the past 12 months have whizzed by! I absolutely agree with you about Klewis's setting - and they are lovely people to deal with too. ::)

Hi Maisie - I would wear it as an 'alternative ering' - basically, I've found I don't liike really wearing more than one ring at a time or stuff on my RH, so now I tend to just have my more important / valuable pieces sized for my left ring finger..
this way I am less concerned about damaging them - and I get better finger coverage ;))
For less valuable pieces such as with gemstones and sterling, I will wear those as RHRs.

Hey echidna - they sure are. Actually it was 3, but I had to cut it down to 2. :(sad
You are right about coloured stones, which was one of the main points bought up in my other thread that gave me reason to think further.

Hi Zhu - the 2 other things are purchasing of loose coloured gems, not actual design projects.
Good point about the cost of metals though.
With full time study and full time work, I hardly have time to be on here hon ;))

Hi Sara,
what you tell me is up to you, hence why I'm asking for genuine opinions and not just an affirmation on a fore-gone conclusion -I'm not asking for people to tell me things to 'make me happy' :?:
TBH, I'm not sure I understand your idea - do you mind to rephrase it? Thanks for posting though.

Hey Panda! :wavey:
That's okay about the older thread.
To answer your queries - as I would rotate between my ering, my sapphire anni ring and the OEC ring - I guess it would get worn about 30% of the time - but probably 100% for the first couple weeks/months ::)
One of the gems is not really easy to source, I have been chasing one like it pretty much since I joined PS..
This will be an 'alternative ering' - although tbh, because the centre stone is larger than my AVC and the setting more elaborate, it will probably end up taking over as my 'main ering' (if that makes sense?!)..

I haven't taken the OEC to anyone further since those other 2 jewellers - I'll probably just wait until its set to have an appraisal done.
K is fine by me ::)
And cheers hon for your comments...although I believe you still owe more photos of your honking old cut! :appl:

Just do it? :p
