What to do with my son's hair?

My 2 1/2 year old, he is a very entertaining but wild little thing. His hair matches his personality, he has rather fine hair but it is wild and depending on the day it gets unruly curly on top, we have never cut his hair because I'm thinking we might let him have long hair. I tried to comb it one morning and had it all neat and just seconds later he had it all messy again. He is the type that has to pick out what he wears....yeah already!

I tried to get a couple of pictures this morning but of course it isn't really curly this morning. What do you guys think? I'm thinking a style like in the picture.

What an adorable ham he is! I say let him & his personality drive his hair style. I think it's adorable, and when it grows in a bit thicker/longer, the style you shared is certainly an option, but then again, there may be others then that strike your/his fancy.

He's SO adorable! Look at that smile!!

I think right now it's tough to have it in a 'style' because it's still wispy and uneven. So rather than looking like its long, it looks messy. That said, if you want to grow it out a bit until it thickens up I think its fine. IDK I'm not one to fuss over a kid having messy looking hair (you should see me most days), but I know some parents are particular about that.

You could also trim some of the longer pieces at the back and leave it longer on top for now while the rest is filling out.

I vote for doing nothing. He's beautiful. I've got one with wild hair (but curly) and I've regretted that hair cut for two years so maybe you should take my advice with a grain of salt.

Thanks JoCo, yes he is a ham so it's very fitting he has this hair! I'm sure that even if I come up with a style he will have his own ideas in a year or two!

Telephone, you are so totally right about it looking messy right now, I don't mind it but sometimes when we go out it just looks so wild and crazy! I think I might take your advice and trim the long pieces in the back, I almost think he likes it being messy since he runs his hands all through it whenever I try to fix it. Little punk he is

He's such a cutie. I let my son's hair grow out because of his beautiful thick blonde curls. When people would mistake him for a girl when he was wearing gender neutral clothing, I decided it was time to get it cut. I cried for days because of it.

Puppmom, do you put anything in his hair at all? I know my son is too young and he still has that baby hair, I was just curious.

siv, it sounds like your son has beautiful hair and I hear you, people already mistake my son for a girl, even if he is wearing the most boy clothes I can find in his drawers ;)

Let it grow out and once it thickens up he will look like a mini rocker, just need the torn and faded jeans and leather jacket!!

This reminds me of my greek family's answer to this issue, my cousin got her head shaved at age 2 so her hair would thicken up. I still remember her running around with a bald head

What a cutie!

He is still in that baby hair stage. I think a little bit of a cut, to get rid of the wispiness might help you to feel more comfortable about the wildness of his hair and at the same time, give it the appearance of thicker hair when it grows out. The ends will be a bit more blunt and that might help.

I'm thinking a simple baby boy haircut like this:

Both my girls were bald babies well after their first birthdays. Then as their hair grew in -perfect ringlets formed-one brunette the other blonde. I never cut it. In about 2nd-3rd or 4th grade (I can't remember) we decided to donate hair to Locks of Love- they make wigs for chemo patients. In one snip 9 inches of curls were gone for a good cause. :appl: But the ringlet curls never came back. :(( So I would not be in any hurry to cut baby hair.

Jordy, I have heard of certain cultures shaving hair so it grows back in thicker, I don't think I could do it though. Yes to rocker hair! He is a music kid so that would be very fitting.

Thanks for those pictures Housecat, so cute! Yeah this baby hair is just so unruly, my ten year old has short hair that I cut myself so this is a new challenge for me.

Lambskin, I'm really not partial to cutting it too much, just a little bit because it's so wispy but I think it's great your girls cut and donated their hair to such a great cause!

I was able to get a snap of what his hair usually looks like before he took a shower. This is what I'm normally talking about.

Stephanie, He looks adorable!!!!!!! Don't so anything to his hair. What a sweetheart.

Steph, we've tried product but, honestly, nothing works. Not for long anyway - one nights sleep and it's back to wild. Winter hats do a real number on him too!

I'd buzz it. Either all over, or like what I did with my 2 year old recently, I buzzed the sides (I think I used a 3) then left the crown long- just trimmed it.

I think people, me included, feel like cutting their hair off is making them too grown up, you wanna keep those baby curls, but I think he'd look less messy with the sides buzzed, and leave the crown long keeps those curls.

What a cutie! Your son looks like a very good boy :appl: :wavey:

My son's hair was similar at that age, wispy and wavy, but texture changes over time. Your inspiration photo shows a boy who is much older with thicker straighter hair. So your son's hair likely won't lay like that even if you grow it out now. I recommend trimming to a length in the first photo House Cat posted and waiting a bit to give him an actual hairstyle.

what a cutie
I have had the same dilemma every time when my children were under about 4 y/o. They kept their baby hair for a really long time (and then it thickened up and was a lot more manageable). The one thing I found important was looking for the direction of growth and cowlicks. Some styles are not doable just because his /her hair is growing in a different direction and when cut too short that fine baby hair will basically just stick up straight....

he's so CYOOOOOOTE!

I don't have any kids so I can't really vote. He's adorbs though.

Have you tried rubbing just a tiny bit of coconut oil in your hands and then running it through his hair? It might tame it a bit. Sort of bring out those beautiful curls and tame the fly always and maybe even let you comb it a bit?

I love that last photo! He's rockin a faux hawk! Cute little hipster baby!

Oh gosh, he is so cute! I really like the hair in that picture and think that style will look great on him!

Sorry for just getting back to you all, I've been having tummy troubles today.

Callie, thanks, he is cute but I've learned cute comes with a good dose of mischief!

Puppmom, no kidding about the winter hats! The static electricity just takes it to a whole new level.

Niel, thats a great idea because really I'm just looking to make it a bit neater but keep the curls so that would be the best of both worlds then.

AZ, he is like the little girl with the curl, you know that one right? Well it applies to the boys too! :loopy:

Baby Monster, it's a good point that his texture is different right now, probably won't change much either if he takes after me, I guess it will be a wait and see thing.

kipari, thanks, yeah it's like you want them to have a style but it just pains you to cut the curls off, I don't think I can do it, so far I'm liking Neil's advice about just trimming the sides and leaving the top long.

Arcadian, anytime you have a hankering to have a rambunctious little boy around, let me know ;) He travels well!

Housecat, I'm glad I was able to get that last photo because it really is more representative of what I created the thread for, the coconut oil I did not think of and I have a huge container of it I got from Costco so definitely have to try that.

tyty, thank you, I am loving that style, just don't know if it will actually work for him or not but no matter what he is going to have some outrageous style going on to match his personality.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, I really appreciate it

I just love his hair as is. You never get to be a baby again, and once that baby hair is gone, it's gone for good. Enjoy it!
