Hi PSers-

I have a dinner dance coming up this weekend and finally located a perfect cocktail dress for the occasion (courtesy of Lord & Taylor, they really have a fabulous dress shoppe). Typically I wouldn't wear a necklace with a dress, I'm petite and don't like to overwhelm my figure with too many accessories BUT ... this one leaves me feeling a little naked on top. I'll probably end up purchasing a cheap costume necklace but am not sure what would look best since the top has a lot of detail; I'm considering a multi-strand pearl necklace or a "statement" piece (see below). I'm a little cautious of the latter since it might overwhelm the rest of the outfit. I plan on wearing a pair of very high black pumps with dress. Since you all have fabulous taste IMHO :-), I trust your opinions and suggestions. Also, anything that can be purchased in a major dept store as opposed to online would be fantastic since I only have a few days left. Thanks! Kisses, Clinique

Possible necklaces?

Because of the detailing on the bodice of your dress, I would skip wearing a necklace altogether. If you check out some pictures of Hollywood stars at award shows, you'll notice that many do not wear necklaces with strapless gowns. Instead, they wear larger earrings as their "statement" jewelry pieces.

If you are going to wear a necklace with your dress, I would go in the opposite direction from the photos you posted and just wear a small, simple pendant (like a diamond solitaire) on a short chain so it doesn't detract from the lovely details your dress already has.

No necklace, especially since you say you are on the petite side. A necklace will be overwhelming, especially either of the two you linked to. Pearl or diamond earrings would be pretty, but classic rather than chandelier types. Have fun!

Pearls, a simple strand.

I like a necklace with strapless, too.

If you have nice wide shoulders the first one would be nice. If not, I would pass...pretty dress =)

I also think a necklace would be too much with all that is going on with the dress. However, if you want to wear one I would make it very simple like a diamond solitaire like someone else suggested. The necklaces you posted have too much going on.

I'm with the no-necklace-or-simple-solitaire bunch. The dress is really great. Any big necklace would be too much. A pair of big sparkly earrings might look good w/it.

I would go for a single black pearl on a fine chain. It is both elegant and understated and would not take away from the dress. IMO

great earrings would be my choice. something really wowser, not to small or dainty to call attention to your face and away from the dress detail....

ps great dress that doesn't require adornment. no matter what you do, people will have their eyes glued to you!

I would skip the necklace and do some pretty eye-catching dangly earrings!

I'm in the "skip the necklace" camp. I'd go with larger earrings and a simple line type bracelet.

Cute dress!

I'm a more is more kinda gal when it comes to playing dress up. (Probably because 99% of the time I'm in a tee or tank, jeans and flip flops!)

Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's is my all time fav dress up look - she rocked the dress, big necklace with blingy brooch, blingy earrings AND a tiara! I think you can totally do a 3 strand necklace with this dress (I like the pearls best out of the 2 choices)! I'd just make sure it was short enough so that it comes above the top of the bodice. I do also think big blingy earrings and no necklace would look just as nice.

(If you go with a more statement necklace, I'd pair it with non-dangly earrings.)

ps lots of celebs wear big & blingy necklaces at awards ceremonies..

I love Audrey Hepburn!

But all that is worn with an absolutely plain, perfectly cut sheath. No pleats, no frills, no flowers, no ruching. The dress the OP posted had all those elements.

And the other celebrities you posted are also wearing Big Jewelry with very simply cut gowns. It's the Red Lipstick Rule: You can wear very red lipstick, but not if you are also going to wear smoky, dramatic eye makeup. One or the other, not both.

I totally get what you're saying but I think, even with all the detail on the bodice, a short (lowest part falling at the collar bone) 3 strand (or even single strand) pearl necklace would look great. In keeping with the red lipstick rule, I'd pair it with simple pearl or diamond studs and that's it.

OR I'd wear pearl/diamond studs and a chunky 3 strand pearl bracelet. OR big blingy dangly earrings, a simple blingy bracelet (or not) and that's it. :)

I woul DEFINITELY skip the necklace and go for long, dangly pearl earrings. The dress is just way too busy for a necklace.

Or a smokey eye ;))

i have to say I agree with the majority about skipping the necklace. The dress is STUNNING but the bodice has enough statement. I think the earrings are a good idea. I hope you post a picture of yourself all dolled up I but you are going to look AMAZING :naughty:

When I saw the dress, my first thought was chocker length cream pearls. A single large pearl would also work well or no necklace at all.

Whatever you choose, it has to be close to your neck and simple because of all of the layers of ruffles on the bodice. I'd go with a simple strand of pearls.
