Honestly, I think practicality is a bigger hindrance than society ... given the way I dress generally, I doubt anybody is going to think a *ring* is over the top unless it has moving parts and flashing lights. Let''s just say I believe in dress-as-costume, and have fun accordingly. So, practically? For an everyday ring, I don''t think I''d want to go above 12 mm or so. So ... 5 carats or so in a round? Up to 7 or 8 in one of the deeper cuts.

On the other hand, there''s the practical factor of what my future likely holds ... I''m a thirtysomething college professor married to a management consultant. For my day-to-day life, my 1.5 carat is appropriate and comfortable, and I don''t really believe in upgrades. When I hit my 40s, though? I can see myself going for a 2+ carat marquise anniversary ring to be worn on special occasions with a smile on my face and a song in my heart ....

Ok, first... BWAHAHHAA... and second, I would like some examples and possibly photos of the outfits you wear! Do you dress that way to work?

My husband is going to think I am EVEN WEIRDER when I start getting him to document my outfits for PS ... but for an example? Today I''m wearing a vivid green collared Michael Stars tee with a full taffeta silk circle skirt of the exact same color from Banana Republic with some artsy earrings featuring green glass beads and metal leaves (the earrings are named, and they''re called "Tinkerbelle''s Revenge" - ''nuff said). The other day while shopping with my sister in law, and I ran across a company that was very "me," as I put it: she looked skeptically at my armful of crimson silk and said "... shiny?"

I totally dress this way to work (well, with less decolletage): I figure this is the upside of being a college prof! We''re supposed to be eccentric, and it''s getting harder and harder to find tweed elbow-patches these days ....

(12 mm. stones, too. Sadness!

I was actually just about to post this question! How funny!

It came up because I am in the process of upgrading to around the 1.7ct mark -- my goal size since joining PS

-- and was talking about it with my only diamond loving friend. I told her that I was a little worried about it looking too big for our work/social lives, and she admitted that she had the same concern for me

I am a university professor and frankly, no one wears bling in this line of work. I would say the average size e-ring around me is under .5ct. I love bling and always have, regardless of where I live, but I don''t want to look silly! But I think I will get used to it

My dream ring is a 2ct, it feels huge on my hand but also looks juuuust right. I doubt I will pony up the extra money to hit that mark, though, so my dream size is around 1.8ct.

When I am older perhaps I would go to a 2.2ct, but no bigger, it really just looks ridiculous given my lifestyle and social circle.

Well, I expect a photo shoot.. "Show me the outfit Circe!"

It is the upside of being a prof. Women can grow mustaches, you can dress like a slob, say whatever you like, fool around on PS all day if you like. I love my job!

My eccentricity will be my big bling (one day)

. I dress fairly simply in 50's style dresses and blazers or sweaters with heels or pointy toed flats.

I''m tall (5''9") and have big hands and fingers (size 8.5 ring finger!). If I had a ring with only a center stone (no side stones or pave), I don''t think a huge ring would even look big on me. Does it sound crazy to say I''d wear a 5 carat if I could afford it?

My (much smaller) ring has side stones and pave, and while it lookf good on me, a friend with a size 3 finger tried it on...it was wider than her finger!!!
