What if the genders were reversed?

I almost find it more disturbing that she "ran away" with this kid, crossing multiple state lines. Isn't that kidnapping? And the kid is a victim, regardless of gender. Five years probation is ridiculously absurd.

I have a cousin whose wife (now ex-wife) is currently in prison for something similar. She was a middle school teacher and a coach for the high school wrestling team. She had a drunken gang bang with 3 or 4 of the high school kids that she coached. These were big boys, all over 6 ft tall, who gave her multiple bruises during their escapade. She plead guilty and got 4 - 20 years.
This really sickens me.

I don't think it should matter if it's a male teacher or a female teacher, coach, or parapro, if the student is 13 or 17, girl or boy. When an authority figure engages in an inappropriate relationship with a minor that minor has been abused, taken advantage of, and damaged in ways that we can never really know.

Deb--Coaches are often really difficult to find, so schools will take what they can get. My former high school had female coaches for the male volleyball teams.

Snort. Hardly. Coaches are a dime a dozen. Finding a coach who also knows a SUBJECT and can string together a complete sentence, and TEACH, well, yeah, that IS difficult.
Really? Around here the schools cannot find or keep coaches long enough. (Except for the schools that have the luxury of hiring FULL TIME coaches--yup, some do. Anyway--I was forced to coach things I know nothing about when I taught HS because the school year started and they had nobody to coach. It happens all the time out here. I had a female friend who had to coach boys water polo her first year teaching. She's scared of the water, and can barely stand the smell of chlorine. I don't think she even knew there was a sport called water polo until they told her she had to coach it. Coaching is such a huge commitment, and it pays nothing, so the schools I've been involved with have always had a difficult time staffing their coaching positions.

Talk about a complete 180. Around here you are hip deep in would-be coaches. But coaches here get bonuses for games WON. Teaching is something they do so they can coach, and unfortunately it shows in the quality of teaching. There ARE a few who can do both well, but my experience - and most others I know have the same - is that is the exception to the rule.

And boys don't play no mamby-pamby water polo here. Around HERE it's FOOBALL baby. And wrestling. And fooball. Did I mention fooball? Oh...and yeah, there's fooball.

You REALLY don't want to get me going on the emphasis on organized sports at the highschool level in the public schools. The abuses and stupidity and waste that flows from them, just annoys me no end.

Deep cleansing breaths....deep....cleansing....whew....

Gotta defend the the manhood of my kinfolk in Italy. Nothing is manlier than water polo, and those guys have the physiques to prove it! My husband's family excels at the sport and a couple of members have played on the Italian National Water Polo Team. One nephew just finished a stint in Australia as a professional water polo player. And don't forget the "Blood in the Water" match between Hungary and the Soviet Union at the 1956 summer Olympics!

Well, I HOPE you know that's a comment on the attitudes around here and not the actual manliness of a particular sport. ;))

I just see the almost religious fervor around highschool sports in general, and football in particular, galling in light of the fact that they won't even spring for a truant officer, among other things.

*Here is a link to some information on the famous, "Blood in the Water" match. I still find the account very sad and moving.

Haha to the water polo discussion. And I have seen those professional water polo players--RAWR.

KSinger--We could not have more diverse experiences re: sports in high school. Sports just aren't that important around here. It's all about TEST SCORES. Ha! As if that's any better. BUT, let's not go there.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Double hot damn!!

And as to the subject of the thread, abuse of power is abuse of power, a minor is a minor and any adult who thinks they are developing a meaningful sexual relationship with a minor is in need of therapy - I think.

But now, suppose the age diff is 17 and 20....? Then what? In the UK the age of consent is 16 and personally, I think that's appropriate. But if you are somewhere where the age is set higher and if the adult is just a very few years older... what then?
