I''ve always had a very diverse group of friends and I''m always fascinated with other people''s interests and how they inspire me or add to my own! I made a new friend recently (answered a CL ad for a dog-walking buddy) who works for the DNR and specializes in ornithology (birding). She points out all the birds on our walks and although I''m pretty familiar with wildlife here she''s taught me some things I never knew before! I love that about my friendships--I''m always learning something new or sharing my knowledge.

So...what have you learned from your friends that you might not have picked up on your own? Have you turned your friends on to a particular hobby or interest of yours? Just a fun Friday thread...

One of my dear friends from college is like an art history super-computer. He can tell what era, artist, date, any piece of art is from. He knows what pieces were originally used as advertisements, what the artists were thinking... he''s incredible!

I''ve learned so much about art in general from him and he''s really inspired me to take advantage of all the fantastic museums in Boston much more frequently. Which is great, because my daughter loves going as well. He turned me on to this really amazing guy named James Hampton. Powerful stuff.

That I need new friends...

none of my friends have any interest in my hobbies.

My best friend, we met on the net by the way, seven years ago.
Is Native American and her perspective on life is very different from
mine. We differ on many things but we always support each other.

She is extremely creative and artistic. Recently
I have sparked her interest in gemstones and she has started
setting some in rings for herself and her family.

I mostly just look at mine in their little gem jars in my big Gem jar box
We''re both happy

Ohhhhhhhhh The mail man is here with three packages............
Must investigate

Oh dear..

My friends are absolutely amazing. I''ve learned:

-true friends will tell you when you''re wrong, tell you when you''re worrying for no reason and tell you when you should really should be worrying

-about all kinds of new music, including Bassnectar, Zach Deputy, Adele and Mika

-about skunks! one of my best friends has a pet skunk. I was afraid at first but I''ve warmed up over time.

-about trees. one of my other best friends loves trees and all the different types and kinds of trees, where they grow, if they are used to represent certain things, etc.

-about religion, not just my own but others too.

-about babies and being a mom. one of my close friends has a 21 month old son. he''s a serious cutie, and we watch the Wiggles with him on the couch while we chat about everything under the sun and drink instant cappuccino. occasionally we have to make a dash to keep him from climbing something/eating something/etc. mommy senses are seriously like spidey senses!

-wow, can I even fit this in a post? I get to hear the interesting things they''ve learned in their courses, so anything from lighting design to anatomy to Catholic sexual ethics.

I can''t say I''ve picked up a specific hobby from my friends, but I am so thankful that I learn things from them every day. Monarch, thanks for posting this thread! Its something I hadn''t quite sat and thought about before, but now that I do, I realize that I learn so much from my friends. I always love chances to be thankful for the life that I have.

Never fear your car.

I broke an armrest clip in my brand new beetle, and was scared to swap it out. My new guy friend took out a flat head, showed me how to pop the pieces out, and replace them in a wink.

From one girlfriend who I considered "family", I learned to NEVER think of friends as family. They are just friends (printed tiny on purpose) and they can exit your life as quickly as they entered, no matter how long you know them.

I''m sorry to hear about your experience.

Honestly......so can family. And they do.

Frankly, I''d bet my next ten years'' salary that my best friend will still be in my life 10 years from now, but my sister still won''t be.

I''m sorry to hear that Allison

You''re right that families are not immune to changes for the worst!
