What do you leave your home thermostat at?

We keep ours at 68. We have gas hot water heat which I always thought was really efficient until reading now how low some of you keep your thermostats. Wow!

We keep the temp set at 68-71 year round. We have a two story brick Georgian that was built in 1948 and I have to say that brick homes are great because they retain heat in the winter months but we don''t really get baked in the summer months. DH does use a space heater in the basement during the winter because it can get a little cold down there, and we use the ceiling fan on the summer setting in our bedroom on the top floor in the summer, but other than that we haven''t had any major issues with heating/cooling.

i hate how high i have to keep it not to be frozen, for the environmental aspect. i know you should go 65 or lower, but when i do i CANNOT move my fingers, even with sweaters and wool socks and a blanket!! we have about the same size house, with separate programmable stats on both levels. during the day we keep the upstairs at 64 since we''re not up there much, and the downstairs at 71-73 (and i''m still frigid sometimes even at that temp! i am also like mara, if the temp drops just ONE degree, i can feel it. i will check the stat and sure enough, it''s dropped one degree!) then at night we switch, the downstairs drops to 62, and the upstairs warms to 71 (in part because my kids have the coldest room in the house so even with down blankets, we have to keep it a little high for their room to be warm enough. when they get older i''ll drop the temp more at night). not sure what our bill comes to, but i don''t think it is quite as high as yours. ouch!

We keep ours at 60 when we''re not home, 64 at night and 66 when we''re home after work and on the weekends. I tend to be cold so I''m always bundled up in the house - sweaters, socks, slippers and blankets are my best friends. Even at those temps our highest bill this year (so far) was around $200 - which is about double what it was when we lived in our apartment - which was 200sqft bigger than the house! Sometimes, when hubby has to work on Sat or Sun morning I''ll turn it up to 68 because I hate freezing in my own home - but also hate paying the huge bills.

We have plastic on all of the windows, except for the kitchen and bathroom, we put weather-stripping on our wooden front door so now it cannot be opened since it''s sealed so tight, we change the furnace filter once a month and even turned down the hot water heater. I should also mention that all of the windows in our house are less than 5 years old and are double paned. Our bedroom windows leak though and will need to be fixed or replaced before we buy the house.

The walls of our house are insulated, but the attic needs more and my dad suggested we venture into the crawl space to see if any needs to be put under the floors. It''s too cold to do that now so when it warms up - if it ever warms up - we''ll do that and see what needs to be done. I suspect there is no insulation under the house and that''s why it''s seems so cold - even though the heat is set at a decent temp and our house is tiny.

lol rainydaze isn''t it funny about the dropping one temp you can feel it thing? i think i am a freak for sure..hahaa.

greg marvels at how small my ''comfort zone'' is...he is like...you are always too cold, too cold, too cold...then okay..okay...then hot hot hot. he says that my comfort level is like 2 degrees before i move into too cold or too hot hehe. but i''d rather be too cold because then you can layer it on. i hate being too hot because then it feels like you''re breathing in super hot air and your face gets dry as well.

in previous years we''d keep the house at 74 and i wouldn''t wear socks or double layers and i wouldn''t get cold. this year i am definitely feeling it more, so i have big puffy socks on and a thin layer for sleeping and then a hoodie with sweats for the house kind of thing and i am still cold half the time at 74!! when greg isn''t home i turn it to 76 and then turn it down to 73 when we go out. it also drives me crazy to let it drop to 65 or whatever then have to bring it up again and they say it costs more to do that so we just keep it consistent between 72 and 74ish--maybe that is why we pay less who knows.

i can''t even imagine having a house at 65 or 60!!! when we came home from our trip this wkd, the thermo was turned off while we were gone because portia wasn''t here, and it was 62 in the house (california so not so cold outside)...i was like OMG get that up right away!! i would seriously have on like twelve layers if we kept our house that cold. and i feel like portia would be cold too. her ears start to get cold at about 71!!

Well, I left my house at 60 yesterday and only turned it up to 64 right before my kids got home and the first thing my son said when he walked in the door was that he was cold.

I would feel really bad making him and his brother wear their coats in the house, so I turned it up to 68 and they seemed okay. No more complaints.

Right now I have my ski coat on and the heat is off again. This is crazy. I'm just not one for roughing.

Anyhow, I ordered these socks here. They're sweater socks so I thought they should keep me warmer than the standard ones I wear. . .I will wear them under jeans, not with that goofy skirt shown in the photo.

I have oodles of that style of socks. Then I wear them with knee high boots under pants. Keeps me warm at work and at home - since work is always cold, too

I keep it at 23C in the winter (about 73F), and about the same in the summer. Yikes - you people are freezing your butts off!!!

50.. I turn my thermostat all the way to nothing. We only use our heat MAYBE half hour to 45 minutes per day IF THAT.. our bill is over 150. Normally, our normal time of the year bill runs about 60-70. Its ridiculous. G*d forbid we should actually be WARM in the house. We walk around in layers most of the time. SDG&E kills us in San Diego.. its pathetic. A friend of ours had a 1200. bill for his house. YUCK!
That is 10C!!! Holy crap - I would be shivering all day long!!!

I know exactly what you mean Mara....I''m the same way! I have this little 3 degree radius and that''s it! lol

I''ve always wondered if it was because of my body temp.....The norm body temp is 98.6, but mine is consistantly right around 97.

We keep our house at around 65 in winter and 70 in summer.

on the flip side it takes me a long time to become hot...so our A/C in the summer doesn''t go on til the house hits 80. most people freak at the thought of that, but again, we have an oddly heated/cooled house so it''s not 80 all over, maybe just in the top front room that gets the sun upstairs. downstairs its more like 75. but in the 70''s in the house is my comfort zone big time!!

SD..not sure why our PG&E isn''t that exp out here but it''s odd, even when it was pricier a few years ago, a friend like 3 towns away would pay like $300 for her heating and ours was still only like $150. totally odd.

Yep. We just leave our heat off. DH is fine with the temperature (and hates forced air heat because it makes our already dry air even dryer), but I am cold all the time. Of course, I have cold hands and feet even in the summer. I wear sweats and thick wool socks at home and usually have a blanket on my lap when I''m sitting on the couch. When I lived in Boston, I kept the thermostat at 65 in the winter.

We only turn on the AC for a few days in the summer. We open windows and run fans. Growing up in Arizona, my parents kept the AC set at 85.

you are not kidding - i always thought i was a weirdo-du-jour for this until i saw this thread and read your post. i was so excited that someone else out there is that sensitive too! and once again, just like you, i have a very small tolerance. 2 degrees too low and i am unbearably cold but a couple too high and i''m peeling the layers off! i make sure our thermostat is set to warm up the downstairs about 1/2 hour before we wake up because i freeze while it comes up to temp, and i make sure the downstairs is set to cool down about an hour after i typically go to bed so that on nights i stay up a little extra, i don''t get hypothermia
20.gif
. i was in awe reading some posts here where people can do 60-65 - i truly envy them for their comfort level and for the fact that they don''t have the environmental guilt that i do!

I just checked our thermostat and it''s at 72. I''m freezing! I''m covered from head to toe and I have a blanket on. I wish I could crank the heat up.

I just had to add that even though we set our temp "cool" according to some, we aren''t cold. I work out in a tank top and yoga pants and the rest of the day I just wear my jeans and a long sleeve shirt/sweater and socks. I sleep au naturel (sorry for TMI) with one sheet, blanket and comforter. Our little boy plays all day in sweats or jeans and socks. But, then again, we''re all built fairly weather resistant.

Before we had our son, we kept our house cooler in the winter. Enough to be chilly. So, we just layered shirts or grabbed a blanket.

We don''t turn on our heater until it''s freezing and I can''t stand it. My husband is pretty warm-blooded and doesn''t mind the cold. His family often leaves the windows open even in the winter. I can''t stand it. I am always freezing cold when I''m over at the in-laws.

I would love it at 70 all the time but I try to save energy so it''s usually at 60-65. I turn on the heather whenever I feel like it. Below 60 is pretty darn cold and I always turn on the heater at that point. I''m always dressed in layers and usually under a blanket at home.

I turn my heat down to about 60 when I am not around. It''s closer to 67-68 when I am at home. None of the heat bills at my two bedroom condo have been more than 70 dollars this winter, partially because I am on the second floor and have only one outside wall.

our house is 2300 sq ft and tri level. we keep the temp at 60 when we''re not home, 63-64 when we are and then 61 when we go to bed. i don''t get cold that easily, so i just usually wear pj pants, a t-shirt if i''m moving around and if i''m just sitting there watching a movie or something, then a sweatshirt or blanket. we''ll crank it up to 68 if we have company cuz we don''t want them to freeze since i know some people get cold easily.

our pg&e bill is around $150.

my comfortable temp would be around 68, but i don''t want to use too much energy unless i have to. we never leave any lights on unless we''re in that room. we have nightlights setup in the hallways so we can see. plus i don''t want to pay the extra money for the heat if we''re not freezing! i lived in my mom''s house for most of my life and she never turned on the heat, so 63 degrees is pretty satisfying for us.

man, mara, how in the world can you have your temp set to 74 degrees and only pay $100?? how many sq feet is ur house?

75 winter 80 summer.

I used too keep it at 68 in the winter but the last couple years since I messed up my elbow its been higher.

I am on a year around average plan on gas and it comes out to an average of $45 a month and electric is 35 in the winter and 100 in the summer.

I would not care what the price is! I could not handle freezing my butt off at home!!!

My bill to keep my house at 23C is about $400/mnth. Maybe things are cheaper in oil & gas rich Alberta!

Since I am home most of the the day, it''s 71 and at night 68. That''s for the winter months. In the summer, a/c comes on at 75 daytime and 68 at night. We''re on equal billing for the gas and monthly it''s about $250. Our electric bill runs about $125.

The electric bill (not equal billing) soars during the summer with the pool heater, but averages about $125.

I''m not into freezing either. We tried the lower thermostat for a few days and then I caved and again have been turning it higher. Seems like 69 is the lowest I can go.

The $1000 bill will cover a few months because we have a 402 gallon tank. . . the tank is huge, but it''s just the thought of having to pay it off in 10 days after the bill is stuck on our door by the delivery guy that freaks me out. I guess our bill ends up being $400-500 per month.

The sweater socks came yesterday and they''re SO soft and warm, but don''t fit under my jeans so I can only wear them under PJs.

heeh milly...i wonder that too! maybe diff counties or cities have diff billing rates? because i have a friend in menlo who can pay up to $300-400 a month whereas we only pay like $150 max in winter months. also i asked a gal at my kboxing class last year about her heat and she said they keep their house at like 68 and pay like $80 so i said well to keep ours more at 74, $100 or $120 is not bad at all. plus i think i''d pay it even if it was $200 or $300. i am a freak about having the house too cold.

We keep ours at ~68. It''s been a fine temperature for us (and I''m always cold!) during the winter. We also just bought a tiny personal heater for our bedroom, since it''s the only room in the house without a vent.

ya, could be the different county thing. who knows?

74 degrees sound so hot! i''m usually pretty warm by the time our temp hits 65 degrees. i have a girlfriend that gets cold really easily. few of you ladies sound like her. then again, even at 74 degrees, she''ll say it''s cold! kekeke.

We keep our heat on 70 when we are home and 65 or maybe a little lower when we are not home. We have separate thermostats for upstairs and downstairs, so the downstairs is programmed to be lower during the night than the upstairs where we sleep. The gas bill averages $195 a month (heat is gas), electricity is around $120 (2700 sq.ft.)

We keep ours around 66-68. We also have separate heating units (one for downstairs and one for upstairs). The upstairs one is over our bedroom (in the attic) so it gets really hot (with the heat) and really cold (with the a/c) so we keep the upstairs warmer in the summer, cooler in the winter and close our door to trap in the air. Also we turn off the vents in the rooms we don''t use (our house is 3200 sf).

You guys are making me cold just thinking about it!!!

We are renting a townhome that has vaulted ceilings, hardwood everywhere, and electric baseboard heaters, 1 downstairs, 1 in each bedroom. The place is an icebox half the time. We usually turn it off during the day, but I instated a new rule based on recent Seattle weather: if it''s below 40, the heat only drops to 55! When home it''s about 65-70, but I swear the first floor never heats up. Then when we go to bed, the room gets turned on to 60 (which apparently means it stays on until 70? The thing sucks.
20.gif
) Our bill was only a record $166 last month though, and it''s only $20-30 in the summer, because it never comes on and no AC, so it evens out I guess.

OOOohh, this is something my husband & I battle about. Winter: I like it on 70-74, my husband wants it around 65 he always complains it's too hot & his nose gets stuffy. Summer we almost like the same temp. It is in the 60's outside today so I have it turned off & anytime we are out of the house I turn it completely off.
