Is it a degree they hold. How long they have been in a certain field, schooling, etc? what do you say?

ETA: ok the obvious are doctors, attorneys, scientists, since I think Schooling has to do with this, what about other professions?

Someone who not only has theoretical knowledge but also vast practical experience. To me it depends, an expert doesn''t necessarily need formal qualifications but has to be very experienced with their subject.

I consider an expert to be someone who is well versed in the ins and outs of their field and is capable of shooting from the hip when it comes to on the spot questions, projects and assignments.

Lorelei- As usual you have sound advice and wholeheartedly agree with you there,
Iwanna- definitely the ins and out in their particular field.

I guess formal education dont always consitute as one being an expert if they don''t utilize that education either no?

Thanks D! I just thought about this some more, also a real passion for the subject is part of being an expert too.

My dad says that the medical definition of an expert is someone who requires a long distance phone call.

Sounds good to me.

I think you are an expert when others in your field or subfield would regard you as one.
