What are you reading right now? Looking for recommendations!

Anyone reading a fabulous book you would recommend? I'm looking for a fictional book that's positive, inspiring, and girly! I don't like light fluffy books, though...something with some meat!

Thanks for any suggestions...

Come to the library section! :)

As far as a light, girly book with some meat; have you read the Stephanie Plum Series by Janet Evanovich? I have ready 8 of the 19 books (don't worry, I don't feel pressure in reading them and it doesn't feel overwhelming to have so many!) and I just love them! I find myself laughing out loud a good majority of the book (DH looks at me like I'm nuts when I'm reading and giggling!) and I really enjoy the story line. Stephanie is a bounty hunter and a terrible one at that! She always finds herself in crazy situations (but not in an annoying way)! The first one is called One For The Money.

Have you read any of Jennifer Weiner's books? She is one of my favorite authors and her novels fall into the chic-lit category, but they're not fluffy. They tackle some big issues, but do it with humor and finesse.

Just finished "Bring Up the Bodies" by Hilary Mantel. It won this year's Man Booker and it was excellent. If you're interested in English history, specifically Henry VIII and Ann Boleyn, I highly recommend it. It's written from Cromwell's point of view.

Oooh, this sounds facinating. I've read both fiction and non-fiction about King Henry VIII and Anne, so I am familiar with the stories that surround them. I'll check this one out. Thanks!

Cool, okay, I'll for sure read this! I would love a book that leaves me laughing out loud. The current book I'm reading ended up being a bit too dreary. Can't wait for it to be over. lol!

I haven't read any of her books, but her name sounds familiar...I'll pick one one of these, too. I love the used book store...I have two Kindles, but still getting books from the used bookstore by me is still less $! Which one would you recommend? Thanks!

I just finished a Janet Evanovitch book. Those are a lot of fun for a cheerful break.

I've frankly loved them all. You're most likely to find her first novel, Good in Bed, or her second, In Her Shoes, at a used bookstore. In Her Shoes was made into a movie with Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette. They're both fabulous. The only thing I wouldn't read first is Certain Girls, since that is a sequel to Good in Bed. I hope you enjoy them if you find a few!

The Panther by Nelson DeMille... I just finished Gone Girl.. and I don't recommend it... I was angry with both characters by the time I finished.

Thanks for this info MayK. I was just about to purchase this on my kindle because my friend said it was great but for some reason I was hesitating. And now I know why. I do not want to be angry at the end of a book. No thanks. Real life makes me angry enough at times lol.

I second the Jennifer Weiner recommendation. I read her first 2 books a while ago and thought they were fun. Not heavy or deep reading though but enjoyable nonetheless for those days you want light. My dh likes the Janet Evanovitch books. I have actually never read any of her books. I might have to check her books out since my "twin" is reading and enjoying them! :cheeky:

Mayk, I felt the same way as you with Gone Girl! I thought it was kind of like a bad Lifetime Movie!!!! :knockout: :knockout: Read the Kitchen House, it was soooo good!

MC, are you thinking of reading the Cloud Atlas? If you start it I will read it too! I own that book!

I love her books!

Have you tried Emily Giffin? She's along the same lines.

Re: What are you reading right now? Looking for recommendati

I'm reading this one The Yokota Officers Club by Sarah Bird. It's about a girl and her family stationed at Okinowa AFB in the early 1960's. It really paints a picture of an odd time and place that I never would experience otherwise; the transplanted America on a foreign soil, the tense time between the idyllic '50's and the wild '60's, the closeness of 6 siblings. It's so realistic, the details! I keep looking at the author's picture, because it's so well written it reads like a memoir, but there's no way she's old enough!

Re: What are you reading right now? Looking for recommendati

I just finished Ladies of the Lake by Haywood Smith, it was good, a little mystery, a little romance, a little heartbreak and a bunch about siblings and the relationships we have with them, I would recomend it.

Re: What are you reading right now? Looking for recommendati

Check out authors Sarah Addison Allen and also Jennifer Crusie - IMHO both write interesting fun books with strong quirky female protagonists...

Ugh. I bought this book on black Friday (it was my usual weekly Target trip and in the evening after the crowds..I did NOT go out in that mess) and got the book fr half price. I started it, but put it aside when I got the 9th Stephanie Plum book. I'm about 100 pages in and I'm just not feeling Gone Girl. I just don't understand the author. I read Sharp Objects from her and it was on the edge of being good, so I thought I would give another book a chance. Now I'm annoyed that I did.

I love the Stephanie Plum series, they are great series! I have not read the last one and I am getting ready to download on my Kindle, I just havent had the time to read in the last couple of months, but I am hoping this weekend I can get some down time to read!

Re: What are you reading right now? Looking for recommendati

Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books are a hoot! Quick, easy, light entertaining stories.

Sue Grafton's books with main character Kinsey Millhone are similar. Also, Stuart Woods' books with main character Stone Barrington.

They are all mystery books.
