What are you OCD about? What would you rather be OCD about?

VRBeauty--That''s interesting. I know that most fonts (serif and sans-serif alike) designed for computer use are proportional, so they don''t require two spaces after a period.

This is what I learned in art school. I spent YEARS taking out the second space in all of my clients documents. Double spacing is a no no in the graphic design field.

OCD about writing documents in Word, must always have 'show all' function on to ensure no more than 1 space after each word and exactly 2 after all periods. Blame it on Law Review in law school...
Wish I was OCD about eating right, counting calories, and exercising!
Do you do this when using a computer? Or only with a typewriter?
With a computer! Typewriter, ha

! I'm an attorney, and as far as I know from what all my legal writing professors taught in law school, my time as a member and editor on Law Review, as well as my 4 years (so far) of practicing law and drafting pleadings, motions, appellate briefs, etc., 2 spaces after periods is the norm!
And not just because I do it, I swear, it is how all documents I see from other attorneys are generally drafted! And I can tell of course!
Hey, I had to ask about the typewriter! (As historically, that's the reason we used to use two spaces after the period.)
I'm glad I learned that some fields *still* put two spaces after their periods even though we no longer use typewriters. I really had absolutely no idea that was the norm in ANY field anymore. That's so interesting.

I teach composition, so I'm interested in these nerdy little details.

Most fields only put one space after the period. It's very unusual to use the two when writing on a computer. My mom runs a desktop publishing business from her home, I'll have to ask her if any of her clients still use the two spaces.

ETA: Does it drive you crazy that the Internet auto-corrects double spaces in your typing? (I'm pretty sure you need to insert a special character code if you'd like a double space to show up.) That would drive me nuts if I was accustomed to viewing a double space after my sentence endings!

Am I missing something here?! My computer, nor any computer I''ve ever worked on, in any version of Microsoft Word or otherwise, has auto-corrected my double spaces after periods and it does not underline it as being incorrect either!!?? And I certainly have never put in any special code...

You are missing something. I said the Internet auto-corrects your double spaces, not your computer. Of course you have control over the amount of spaces you put into documents you create in word processing programs such as Word Perfect or Microsoft Word. HOWEVER, when submit text to the Internet (such as here on PS) HTML ignores white space that exists beyond one space between characters. At least, I *believe* that is true. (You can see in your posts that there is only one space after sentence endings. That's what I was talking about. I just figured that would bother you if you're accustomed to seeing two spaces after your sentence endings. It would definitely annoy me. In other words, I would be "OCD" about those little spaces that didn't exist once posted.)

I think you might have taken my questions the wrong way. I was just curious about the double spaces because I really didn't realize any fields still use them. That's all. I am actually and honestly interested in these things. I know most people are not.

I am also OCD about checking my iron and flat iron to make sure they are off before we leave the house. I do it 3 times and then I make my DH do it too. (He gets so annoyed with me)

I also look back at the garage door closing to make sure it''s closed. If I forget to do this, I turn around and check it.

I am a SAHM, but when I used to work, I would check the alarm clock so many times that I ended up with a callous on my finger. Luckily, I''ve been a SAHM now for a year and a half so it is gone now!

I'm OCD about cleaning/straightening my house. I actually start to feel sick to my stomach if there is too much of a mess going on, which happens often with 3 boys in the house. I can't go to bed with everything all over the place. I wish I wasn't like that b/c by the next day, it is a mess again!

Magsy: It's easy to set up -- it's one of the things I ask all new staff to do (along with setting up some phrases that we use non-breaking spaces for). I don't use Word on my home computer, but I think this article describes the steps I use:

http://word.tips.net/Pages/T001820_An_Automatic_Two_Spaces_After_a_Period.html

Haven -- you've got me to thinking and I read up a bit on this new (to some of us
3.gif
) convention. There are good reasons for reconsidering it! That's not in my hands, but I'll bring it up if given the chance, and I'll try not to grouse if that change is foisted on me. The two space habit could be really hard to break though... I even use it here!

God bless you Fiery. I have a son who is OCD from a brain injury. His things are doing things in three''s. Shuting door and making sure they are locked, spending forever washing his face, removing lint

from his pillow. I confess to you, it makes me nuts. He doesn''t take meds for it though.

My OCD-ness takes the form of taking off all my jewelry and putting it in the same place every night.

luv2 -- I have a form of that -- I have to take off every bit of jewelry before I go to sleep, even if I''m just laying down for a nap.

I hope my light-hearted take on OCD isn''t distressing anyone who''s dealing with the real thing.

Vr-it''s not for me, no worries

My sillier quirky OCD stuff has always been around. The more serious stuff is new for me (came after DD was born).

I''ve always looked for patterns for stuff though, I like things to be even. I think that''s why I''ve always been so good with math
2.gif

luv2sparkle-will your son consider medication? Like I said, it''s new for me but it really does take over your mind and is so frustrating. The meds don''t do much to you, just helps you calm down enough to think more rationally.

AHH okay, so HTML speak corrects it! I absolutely type in 2 spaces. I guess it bothers me more when simply typing it, rather than seeing it out. Although some people's posts do appear to have 2 spaces after periods... maybe they are the ones putting in a code? I admit, I am not very smart when it comes to HTML, coding, and all that good stuff! I am actually interested in this too. I am a total nerd

I apologize for the total threadjack!!

On a more serious note, I absolutely feel for those with legitimate OCD symptoms. I do have some of those as well, shocking, ha!

Lizzy, turning off my flat iron is a huge one of mine too! I also have a serious obsessive problem with picking, bordering on self-mutilation... I just cannot stop. I bit my nails horribly for my entire life basically, to the point where I bit/pulled them off entirely. Now that I've grown them out (because who wants to see my beautiful diamond on a hand full of hideous bloody/nubby fingernails!!!), I've transferred that habit to other places... EEK. Just. Can't. Stop.

I am OCD about dead brown leaves in a household plant!
Let me come into your house with needy plants... I''ll never leafe ( haha leave ;) )

I type two as well - it looks wrong when there isn''t two in my opinion. I learned it in high school over 20 years ago and its just a natural habit at this point and doesn''t take me any extra time to do it whether it shows up or not... to remove them would take MORE time lol I noticed that these days they seem to be teaching single spacing to my kids and it bugs me.

I''m like the princess and the pea in bed - if there is anything but absolutely flat sheet beneath me it bugs the crap out of me to the point where I feel almost a claustrophobicish feeling and I have to get up and remake the bed. Drives my dh nuts - especially if he''s already in bed.

I''m really picky about having super clean dishes. I''ll eat an m n m off the floor (in my house) but I won''t scrape off a minuscule spec of whatever without running it through the dw again.

I''m terribly OCD about pictures being hung straight. I admit that I''ve been in people''s homes, and if no one''s looking, or in another room, I''ll quick straighten a picture. I do this at work, too. And I swear someone''s on to me, cuz I have to straighten that same picture every single day!!!
40.gif

I also have to have my closet color coded. When I was a teen, I used to go a little nutty because my mom would hang things backwards, and I''d find a blue stuck in with the reds.

Then my office - I''m really OCD about everything having a certain spot. Someone else uses it on my days off, and this lady enjoys rearranging stuff in the most random spots. Hmm....maybe she''s the one tilting that picture every night.....

Fiery, I don''t think so since it was caused by the brain injury from a car accident when he was 18. When he was first coming out of the coma, they had a wash cloth rolled and taped up and he would
use it to wipe his mouth three times. If you held his hand (only one works), for an hour, when you let go, he would finish how many times he had left. If he had wiped once, he would do two more.
He gets that he does it, but it really doesn''t bother him all that much. He calls himself ''glitchy''. Most of the time it doesn''t bug any of us, but late at night when I hear him trying the sliding glass door
out to the backyard three times, it kind of sends me. When he leaves the house, he always locks me in, and then has to try the door three times.

I think, as you can see here by this thread, we all have our little ''glitches''! Some are just more noticeable than others. I know I have plenty! I hope the meds help and you get some relief!
I agree, your daughter is so precious!

VB-no worries!

I donno why I didn''t mention these 2 things...

I am sooooooooooooo OCD when I do nails - The french white smile line... IT HAS TO BE PERFECT ( or close to ) otherwise I wipe it off and re-do. And it annoys me too when i cannot get it right the first time lol.

I am OCD about my cell phone. Yes I need to check my cell phone all the time. And I know it drives my hubby crazy!

I have to do certain things four times each. I get very irritated if someone tries to stop me from doing them four times. I know this bothers my loved ones. I''ve been doing this since I was a small child. I''ve never been diagnosed with anything, but I''ve never seen anyone about it, either.

DH knows I need four small pecks when he leaves, not just one, for example.

I like calling it a "glitch."

I had a friend growing up who had to even things out--if her brother punched her on the left arm, she''d punch herself on the right, that sort of thing.

Oh, good--we can be nerds together. I was worried you might take my questions as challenges when really they were just questions. I''m glad to know that you share my interest in these details!
I changed my two space habit in college when one of my English profs refused to read my essays until I made the change. I remember it was very difficult to do at first, but I adjusted and now I don''t think I could go back to the two spaces without some difficulty, now.

I'm OCD about nail polish on my fingers. As soon as there's a chip, I have to take it all off. I bugs me so much! And that's why I don't pay for manicures - they chip after a day or two and I end up taking the polish off anyway.

I'm pretty glad I'm not OCD about anything else!

"Glitchy!" Perfect! That sounds a lot better than what I sometimes find myself calling myself -- if you think it's appropriate to tell your son about this thread, please pass on some thanks!

You know the marks your vacuum makes in your carpet? or the track your mower leaves? Gotta be symmetrical or "rhythmical/patterned" or I have to start all over and do it again.

I wish I were OCD about house keeping. I am not, so it is odd that that carpet tracks have to be perfect. I can go weeks with out vacuuming, but when I do you can get out a compass, protractor, t-square and gps and use my work for a guide. NUTSO!

So odd that my "Feng Shui" and "Moo Goo Guy Pan" gets all outta whack if it is not perfect, I am obviously unbalanced and disturbed. (surprise to many of you I know!)

PS. No offense to wall paper lovers, but I CAN''T DEAL with the repeated patterns. I ABHORE WALLPAPER. Especially borders. See the unbalanced correlation? No sense huh?

I'm OCD about things being straightened in my house. If a DVD is poking out, I have to poke it back in so it's even. Art or photographs have to be straight. My wine is organized by vintage and then alphabetically by vinyard (my husband finds this one OTT, btw). All of the tassles on throw pillows have to be facing forward. I have the lumpy sheet thing that Cehra has, and the vacuum marks that CasaBlanca needs to do over if they're off a bit. All of my blinds have to be pulled the same direction. Magazines in a rack have to be organized by date and issue.

My poor husband . . . LOL

When I was little, my grandmother used to tell me all the time that I couldn''t leave over just one piece of food because "it would be lonely." For years I actually thought my food would be lonely if I left it over, and I could never have *just one* of something because something inside me started to panic that "it would be lonely." So when I was a little kid, I felt bad for my food and I pictured it crying and being all by itself if I ate just one piece or left over just one piece.

Ever since then, I am very OCD about not doing anything just once. I also hate even numbers, so I need to do things at least three times. For example, if my husband is giving me a kiss goodnight, he knows to give me three kisses. Or five. Or seven. But it can''t be one because it will "be lonely" and it can''t be an even number either. I get upset (not mad, I just start to feel very uneasy) otherwise.

This actually JUST happened five minutes ago - I was eating a piece of chocolate and my husband asked for a small piece. I handed him three small pieces. He said he only wanted one, but then he saw the look on my face and said, "Oh right, it can''t be lonely... I''ll eat all three."

I know I must sound like a crazy person. I blame my grandmother.
3.gif

I also check to see if the door is locked at night before bed three times and I check to see if the oven is off and the microwave is unplugged three times before bed and before leaving the house.

Lauren: I suspect that you and I have nothing in common. I'd joke about not having an organized bone in my body... not a single alphabetized thing in my house... but it does get me down at times.

Zero, zip, zilch... except for the diamonds thing, of course!

my OCD''S
1-checking stove before leaving house(in a fire related accident as a child and house caught fire 3 years ago and still rebuilding kitchen)
2-checking locks before bed (house broken into once and an attempted forced entry a by man high on meth and looking for drugs)
3-Jewelry must be stored properly after wearing...never thrown in a bag,box or jumbled up to get bent or scratched.
4-anxious around rust, gasoline or bleach with jewelry on.

Lilac-- your husband is so cute!

I don''t think I have any OCDs. Well, I can''t stand my knees touching when I''m sleeping, but I''m not sure if that''s OCD or just comfort-based. But yeah, if I don''t have a knee pillow, I probably won''t sleep at all.

I wish I had OCDs about working out, eating vegetables and being neater with my home and car.
