I took this picture last night at a Christmas Walk.

The ladies and their raccoon were sitting in the front row, listening to carols.

The raccoon was totally chill. His covered stoller was nearby.

Yup. :?

You certainly don't see that everyday.

My parents had a cabin in the mountains and there was a couple that lived there year around. They would feed foxes table scraps. It got to the point they would come up and eat out of your hand. It was pretty amazing to see. Those foxes had beautiful fur, they didn't look like scroungy wild foxes.

Maybe she's gonna make a coat, and one of those daniel boone caps.

Seriously, racoons are wild animals and should not be kept as pets.

I agree. And yet, the raccoon seems happy.

GAH! SOO CUUUTEEEE  Maybe she rescued this one as a baby or something. I recently saw an article about a guy who rescued a baby squirrel, nursed it back to health when it was in a very bad state, and the squirrel got very attached to him.

http://www.kp.ru/daily/25895/2854763/

Sorry it's in Russian, but the pics speak for themselves. The guy is a taxi driver and takes the squirrel with him to work (though most of the time it stays hidden, sleeping). He does say at some point that he can't spend too much time away from the squirrel because it starts reverting to its wild nature without constant contact.

Wow, iLander! they must get a lot of double takes when they are out with their 'furbaby' in its stroller! Interesting.... :loopy:

I feel like this is a weird quirky movie about a lesbian couple that adopts a raccoon because they lost their child... And the raccoon ends up being their real kid that got turned into a raccoon by some evil wizard.

I need to ease up on the tv...

      SERIOUSLY!!! ;)

This.is.amazing.

Seriously, they could be rehabilitators. Sometimes rescued animals can't be re-released into the wild for whatever reason and they are kept by people who know what they are doing. I have rescued many critters( foxes, bats, turtles...) and turned them over to rehabilitators for care. Some can be mended and released, some die, and some are mended but can't be re-released, so they are kept. Thought about becoming a rehabilitator myself, but my current pups wouldn't appreciate it, so maybe one day in the future. Then I can listen to carols with a racoon. :D

That would freak me the heck out! I live in an area where we have big, aggressive, scary raccoons. They are vicious. The babies look cute but the adults are terribly destructive. Bleah! One pooped on the roof right outside our bedroom window this year. It was disgusting and huge. :nono:

I totally support rehabilitation. I don't support the idea that rehabilitated animals need to go out in public in a covered stroller though. I don't see how that's part of the program. ;))

by reading the title i thought you saw Kenny...

judging from the photo it looks like the raccoon already may have eaten their faces off.

Yes, well, eccentricities aside...

Really, do ANY animals need to be pushed around in strollers? But if the 'coon is happy and healthy, then to each their own.

Busted! :D I threw a quick motion blur on there to hide their identities, it being the internet and all.

Be careful, or I will have to tell the story of my pet squirrel . . .

Oh my god Enerchi!! How did you know I am a professional foot tapper?! I go to competitions all the time! I have anywhere from awards, medals and trophies! There is a couples competition coming up if you wanna join me!

That is really scary to me. I heard of a story once where people kept a raccoon and a vet warned them that at around 2 years old they can become really vicious. The people didn't listen and a person in their family was maimed and blinded when the thing went nuts. I have always loved racoons till I heard that story. When we lived in the mountains we have a little family of raccoons that would perch in a tree close to our house. So cute, but apparently dangerous!

But really - iLander - we are very curious about your squirrel story!

Okay, here goes the story of My Pet Squirrel

My grandmother and I were out in the yard one day, she was watering things, and I was doing whatever it is you do when you're nine. We heard a high-pitched squealing that seemed to come from the garden hose. Turns out, my grandmother was running the hose over a tiny baby squirrel. We looked up and saw the nest he had fallen from. We moved the hose, went inside and waited a few hours, but the squealing continued and Momma squirrel didn't seem to be anywhere. I begged and pleaded until my grandmother said we could go out and get him, it was getting dark and he sounded weaker. We brought him inside and he quieted right down, and we put him in my doll carriage in the kitchen (of course! Where else would you put a squirrel?). He seemed happy, cuddled in the blankets and went to sleep. He slept all night and the next day, first thing, I went to the kitchen to see him.

His eyes were open! He looked right at me and made a "humph" noise. I jumped ten feet. He got up, and then my grandmother said it was time to feed him. We used a medicine dropper and feed him Product 19 cereal sludge with milk. He stood on his little hind legs and held the dropper like a bottle. He was tiny, not as tall as the dropper. Satisfied, he looked sleepy again, and we put him back in the carriage.

Then it was decided the carriage and the squirrel would live in my room. His days were feeding, and sleeping, for about a week, then he started to explore my room. He climbed all over things, and seemed completely at ease with me. I would scratch under his arm and he would raise his little arm and close his eyes in bliss. One day, when I was at school, he gnawed the toes off all my dolls. I got mad at him, and he seemed to get mad right back. He chattered at me, and I chattered at him. Over time, I learned what his different sounds meant, and to this day, I talk to squirrels in parks and they look a bit surprised that I can "understand" them.

He got bigger and bigger, and one day he looked curiously at my window. I opened it and out he went. He came back a little while later, and that was added to his routine; eat (mostly almonds and peanuts at this point), sleep, go outside. We leaned a 2 x 4 outside my window so he could come and go as he pleased. His trips outside lasted longer and longer, sometimes all day. Then a couple of days. Then a week. One night, it was pouring rain, and my window was closed, but he sat on the windowsill squealing until I let him in.

The next day he went outside and I didn't see him for a couple of months. Then one day, I heard him chattering outside. He was up on the telephone line, and behind him was a lady squirrel and a row of three baby squirrels. I waved, and he and his little family loped off down the line.

NOTE; my grandmother was scrupulous about cleaning up after him. She was one of those extremely clean people. We never intended to keep him, it was strictly a rescue operation. I enjoyed my 6 weeks with him tremendously.

lol Maybe they had given it a couple hot butter rums or something and it was mellowed out?

When I see people like that, I think to myself that they must be really happy and free because they don't care what anyone else thinks! If only I wasn't so uptight...
