OLYMPIA, WASH (Reuters) - The Washington state Senate passed legislation on Wednesday night to legalize gay marriage, moving the state closer to joining six others in recognizing same-sex nuptials.

The 28-21 vote in favor of the measure sent it on to the state's House of Representatives, where the bill is expected to win swift approval by a comfortable margin as early as next week.

Both legislative bodies are controlled by Democrats. But the political dynamic on the issue shifted after Governor Christine Gregoire, a Democrat in her final year in office, announced last month she was backing the gay marriage bill.

I'm so proud of my state! WOOT! Equal rights for everyone - go WA! :appl: I had tears of joy in my eyes as I read the news. It's about damn time!

How many more states to go???

When I saw the headline, I thought you meant Washington State University and wondered what WSU could have done that was so great!

I'm very proud of our state, and hope that the legislation withstands the inevitable state referendum that will put the issue to the voters. I think it would still pass, but people have waited long enough to have the right to marry. They shouldn't have to wait even longer.

A lot, I think. Hawaii's civil union law went into effect January 1. It was a long battle, stretching back to the early 90's. We still have to deal with the "my bigotry against gays isn't bigotry" brigade so we'll see. I do agree with you. Equal rights for everyone. That will probably have to be imposed by the Supreme Court as in so many other examples in history. BTW, OP, I thought this was about sports. :saint:

This is fantastic news and a good day for equality.

Looking forward to seeing some PS weddings in Washington State!
