Wedding Wanted Vera Wang Mermaid Dress

Hi Ladies, I hope you are all well, I read this site most days!

Can I ask for your help please?

I am seeking a vera wang classic mermaid duchess satin wedding dress in Oyster, Ivory or White is a size 10 plus USA size.

It has the lovely buttons all the way down the back, nice and simple, I just love it!!

I do not mind used or new.

Willing to travel or pay then ship.

I love Portia''s dress and it is exactly the dress I am seeking! I have left it to late to order direct and I am getting married in 6 weeks!! Yes, 6 weeks!! Hee hee!!

6 weeks is pretty tight and don't know where you're based but look at www.bridepower.com where I got my silk mermaid vera wang; they carry samples usually label size 10 US. there's one dress on there that's a mermaid shape but has a black sash bustle (http://www.bridepower.com/wedding-gown-browser.ASP?designer=Vera%20Wang&line=8&ccid=07072&page=2) that may not be to your liking. Bridepower do have a B&M boutique so if it's convenient for you to get to, you might want to check it out in person to save waiting for it to be shipped (altho shipping can be quite quick).

Failing that, you could try Monique L'Hullier's Geisha dress which is verrry similar to the classic VW you're looking for. I've tried this on and the silk fabric has a beautiful soft sheen to it. given your timeline, try this link - http://www.preownedweddingdresses.com/dresses/4119/Monique-Lhuillier--Size-6.html - as it's a preowned, it can be shipped much more quickly. Remember you may have to factor in some tailoring!

Thanks so much Trinity911!! I will defo look into all the links posted. I went to the vera wang store today in London and they are also going to see what they can do, the dress I love is a classic design so maybe??
They have said that they may be able to offer me a refreshed sample. The issue is that Vera has set timelines of at least 6 months to get a dress in, so I am cutting it silly fine!!!
Thanks again, I will report back what happens.
They are also going to check with New York, my problem is that I am a size 12 uk, and most samples are about a 10 uk.

that''s such a shame the seller wouldn''t ship! I think there are other Geisha dresses on that site but don''t know if they''re slightly on the small side.

Which Vera Wang shop did you go to - the Fulham one or the one in Selfridges? For the ML one, I know there''s a sample in Browns Brides, not sure what size, think it may be a 12 cos I''m a 10 and they needed to clip the back for me...do remember however that most designer dresses can be let out one size so even if the sample''s a 10, a good seamstress should find enough ''give'' in the side seams to make it up to a 12. Failing all that, have you thought of going to a dressmaker who could recreate the dress for you? I found what looks like a good tailoring company who I''m considering using to alter my VW dress when I get it. Apparently they can turn around an item in 4 to 5 weeks. Yep, I am a londoner!

I went to selfridges in London, vera wang. They are going to see if New York have the fishtail or maybe a bride has ordered it, but is not getting married for at least 6 months or more. So they can give me hers and order hers asap. I dont know if it is 100% possible??

So my options are the route above or see if another bride has worn the dress portia wore and is willing to sell it.

The sample in Selfridges fitted me perfectly which was good, so in least I know the rough size I need. I have narrowed down the fact that the only dress I would like would be the classic duchess satin with buttons down the back vera wang!!!


Thanks for your advice. There is another company in Battersea South London that does alts, they are on the web, I think they are called bridal alterations or similar.


If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know.

My next step is to take a few hours out tomorrow and just search the knot for any brides that wore the dress and see if they are prepared to sell.

As much as I love the dress, when I wear it, if another bride wanted to buy it, I possibly would, again not 100% sure on that!Lol!

I used bridal alterations (also trading under designer alterations I think) and found them a bit funny tbh. I inherited a fur coat (sorry, not very PC, I know but it wasn''t a new one at least) and wanted it made smaller...it took them two go''s to do despite having pinned it the way I wanted it the first time I went there and then they charged me over 100 pounds...and this was about 5 years ago!!

for UK based preowned dresses, try www.dressmarket.net - there are a couple of vera wangs & ML''s on there but not what you''re looking for, I''m afraid. There is one mermaid VW for sale for 2k - that''s my dress that I ordered from bridepower

Thanks Trinity, sorry to hear about bridal alts,I have never used them so not sure what to expect. The price charged and the fact that they did not do it properly is very poor service!!

Bridepower website is still down, so cannot see the dress, I find out tomorrow if Vera Wang can sort out a dress for me!!!! Fingers crossed!!!!!

Oh, trinity I had a look at bridepower, the site is back up, but it isnt the dress I am looking for, if anyone knows anything about the vera wang 11300 classic mermaid dress, PLEASE let me know!!!

I know this is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but any help would be very useful!!!

Oh Sidewalk, I''m so flattered that you like my dress. I loved the simplicity of it, too. I really wish I could help you, but my mom bought the dress for me and she has told me in no uncertain terms that she would be *really* *really* upset with me if I sold it. She''s very sentimental! So much so that she didn''t like that I was going to take the velvet ribbon sash and cut it shorter to use with another dress I have. She laid on the guilt so thick that the sash is still intact!

LOL! I have to admit though that I''m a bit attached to it as well (and I was such the anti-bride). I''ve been searching the web for you in hopes to find it or something very similar. Nothing yet. I''ll let you know if I find anything. Good luck in your search!
